    Ok thank you
I hope this also worked for you as I can safely state I've never had an issue with an OEM Xbox 360/One controller with 8.1 or 10.

Look in Device Manager. I didn't think mine installed either. It was right there.

Funny thing about the device manager. Sometimes my 360 controller shows up and most of the time it doesn't. I know there is a disconnect somewhere I just can't find it and it's really frustrating!! Lol

May have to do with USB port? Are you using the same one every time?

It's a 2.0 on the front of my computer. I can't remember if I tried the 3.0s but I guess I can try that when I get home. I'll report my findings then

The X360 controller is a hungry beast, make sure the controller has at least 500mA of power from whichever port you're using.

I had this problem with the xbox one controller for awhile. I found a solution that works for me is that uninstalling the drivers for the xbox one controller, and then reconnect the controller to automatically install the drivers. The error time notification no longers pop up anymore.
