Acces Is Denied, all solutions I could find did not work

    Hello everyone,
At the moment I am trying to install Star Wars Battlefront 2 on steam. It was previously downloaded, but when a modpack installer tried to do it's thing, it reported that it could not access a file. Sure enough, it couldn't, and after that steam reported 'Missing file privileges' and could not repair the original installation.

I went through the file explorer to the location of the offending file. I could not open it (Access Is Denied error), so I attempted to take ownership.

    This is what I found:

I was unable to take ownership because I (as the sole account, and as an administrator account) lacked permission to "view or edit this object's permission settings."

I enabled the hidden administrator account, and attempted to do the same thing through that. I was met with the same outcome.

I've been struggling to deal with these Access is Denied errors for months, usually taking ownership would fix it (though this is not the first time that it hasn't). I haven't got a clue what to do from here, and all the time I've spent looking through existing forums, posts, articles, videos, etc. about them hasn't actually helped at all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Not trying to be funny but this nearly sounds like an unauthorized hack to install an unqualified game to Steam. Steam used to provide a public listing of all qualified games; however that listing has been removed for whatever reason. This site however, has a copied list here which does not include Star Wars... even though Steam sells the game.

Here's what I mean... Steam sells Fallout 3, which I have the retail boxed version. However; since Steam only allows keys in certain sequences, my store bought game can not be registered there. Same goes for my store bought copy of Time Shift. And these are fully legitimate games bought in the U.S. from a major vendor.

Anyway, because these games use a different key sequence than what Steam demands, they can't be registered. On the other hand I have Unreal Tournament 3, whose key does match their requirements, and not only was I able to register the game, but they gave me the Black Edition (full game plus add-ons).

All that said, and with regard to your "access denied" issue, not sure what's going on there, but if the game "was" previously downloaded from Steam, you'll need to contact them for a fix.

And here's their FAQ on the Retail CD Keys.

    Good luck.

I bought the game through steam a few years ago, never had any problems until now with windows 10. I had the same problem with Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, but was able to resolve it myself through the normal take ownership method. I (like many others) have had the issue with various other random files, but this is the first time I have been unable to fix it by taking ownership.

Not to diminish your issue but I've been using Steam since it first came out and only had one instance where I had to take ownership of a folder but that was an error on my side, not Steam. Outside of that no issues using Steam with various operating systems including the latest version of Windows 10 Creator. In fact I was just playing both Deus Ex: Human Revolution and Skyrim last night. Both these game require Steam.

If you're having ownership issues with folders and Steam I would suggest you look at you PC profile to insure you have the proper ownership credentials. And that all the drives on the system include said profile in the security tab with full privileges.

See this guide - Tips on Troubleshooting Game Issues, step 14.

You might also see my post here on security issues... Windows Parental Control issue???

And I would still urge you to contact Steam on the issue.

    Good luck.

I am now absolutely certain that it is a windows issue of some sort, and not related to steam. (Even if it were steam, getting a useful response from steam support is like seeing a half big-foot half unicorn creature in atlantis)

It is related to the relatively common 'Access is Denied' errors. It has often been associated with One Drive (however these files are not touched by One Drive, and I have One Drive disabled), and can be fixed by 'Taking ownership' of the folder/files through the advanced security setting in the properties. The main issue (as pictured above) is that I cannot take ownership because of the errors saying I cannot view or edit the permissions. I tried to do it through the hidden Administrator account, and got the same thing.

EDIT/UPDATE: By changing the permissions for the entirety of steam in the security tab of the steam folder properties, and applying the update to all child objects I was able to fix steam's access issues, and it is now downloading the game again. Once it's done I'll check and see if that resolved the 'Access is Denied' errors altogether.

Glad to hear it. BTW the links I supplied addresses that very fix

Couldn't follow through the link to the seven forums, and I just assumed it contained just the normal solution which I was unable to do.

    Regardless, I appreciate your help

Links working fine here but ok.

And assume nothing until you actually see it. Some people actually know a thing or two
