Just bought Mafia 3 once they released the patch that removed the 30 FPS cap lock, so I'll probably be playing it for the next couple of weeks.
Yeah, you now have options for 60 and unlimited FPS. It seems that if you have in game VSync turned on, though, it limits you to 60 FPS even if you have a 120 or 144 Hz monitor and set the settings to unlimited FPS. Turning off in game VSync caused tearing, though, so I turned on FastSync in Nvidia Control Panel as a workaround to having it on in game.
Also, the game is pretty heavy on hardware. Even with my 1080, I can't get a steady 60 FPS even with some settings on medium. I tend to hover around 48-70 FPS in game and 144 in cutscenes.
A GTX 1080 only managing an average of 43 FPS at 1440P? I wouldn't characterize it as heavy on hardware. I would simply say, as Guru 3D does, "another console port". Ah, NO THANKS.

Mafia III had a very rough start with the framerate cap, luckily it has now been removed. The game feels way more responsive and renders much better. The HIGH quality settings will remain a tough mode for this console port really.
Let me again mention that Mafia III is difficult to measure - FPS overall can be off by an extensive amount depending on variables like what location you are in the city,*with denser populated and higher buildings in the area your framerate can vary 10~15 FPS easily. Also the*the weather and even day/night conditions matter, the car you drive and traffic can have an effect on performance. Also driving in a car eats away deeper in your*framerate*opposed to walking inside a building. We use a scene where we drive and where the FPS is best described as the worst case scenario. So overall your FPS will likely be a nice notch higher, but*you will run into situations where the FPS is as low as we have shown in this article, that is a guarantee. The game graphics themselves can be tagged as OK, the scenery is a little flat and dull and lacks that crisp texture feel that GTA-V for example offers. What Mafia III does well is ambient behaviour with low sun light etc as shown in the screenshot above. I have played the game hours now, I do like it but it is repetitive and I would have preferred a more Italian Mafia feel. Mafia II was probably the best one. Gameplay wise I'd tag this with 4 out of 5 stars. The new patch massively increase gameplay with better framerates, but you are going to need a heck of a lot of graphics card performance to render at 2560x1440 and above at high image quality settings throughout all locations and scenes in the game.*"
Mafia III VGA Graphics Performance Benchmark review - PC VGA Graphics card guide
I'm actually able to overlook the massive framerate swings and little bit of stuttering just because the story has gotten me pretty hooked in so far.
That said...2K has been pretty disappointing lately in terms of the state of their games on release. The remastered Bioshocks had tons of issues upon release, and now Mafia 3 as well.
Look at how much better the (DX12) 2K performance on GOW4 is compared to Mafia 3.
"NVIDIA has been all over this title and it shows being a well optimized proper PC gaming title, the Pascal cards perform really well thanks to the large VRAM buffers and tweaks, but also the 970, 980 and 980 Ti did a terrific job."
And the 1080P performance:
Gears of War 4 DX12 PC graphics benchmark review - PC VGA Graphics card guide
Nvidia has been all over this title, indeed. Perhaps Microsoft is finally thinking of PC gamers as they should (at least single GPU owners, for now).
I'm going to buy GOW4 and see how it runs. $79.99 for me for just the standard edition. Ouch!
Wow. Is GOW4 a Windows Store UWP game? I'm still pretty gunshy on those after the whole Quantum Break thing.
LOL. Yes, it's UWP. GOW UE (UWP) runs fine on my single GPU config. The frustration I had with it was the never ending and never kept promises of MGPU.
With those benchmark numbers, and the fact that Nvidia has been all over this title I'm keeping my fingers crossed. It's downloading now and I assume I'll be able to play it after midnight. Holy Hard Drive space, Batman! 73.33GB. I'm glad I moved to unlimited usage with my service provider.
Please report back and let us know how it runs. Hopefully it's a good as advertised.
