Nobody calls "Wolfenstien 3d" grandfather of all FPS. Literally when FPS was being marketed it was just another FPS for PC gamers. That would be people like my dad. I never liked the game at all until much later in life. Same with DOOM series. I meh ugh spending all day long fighting hellscape monsters. People made jokes that "Troops in Iraq/Afghanistan could not tell the difference" I mean what was the point outside of being a run and gun, get to the exit point and collect as many points. There was tons of FPS that came and went but for my generation at least there was "Duke Nukem" and I mean before he was in 3d. When that hit it was impossible to image. Like something out of "Escape from NY" with orcs.

Beyond that "Golden Eye" took helm via the N64 and eventually "Perfect Dark" and later "Metroid Prime" which pulled more people into the genre. Games like "Dues EX" for instance on the OSX and of course "System Shock 2" really started to hit hard.

I believe next to "Wolfenstein 3d" there was "Operation Wolf".

"Operation Wolf" was the defacto game that started this genre off. I miss seeing "American Gladiator Girl" being denied only for a crippled person in bloody uniform begging for help. Drives you insane when you fail. Your commander has those "I have not slept in forever" eyes.

Going further back we would have to say something like "Duck Hunt" or the physical shooting gallery that duck-hunt came from.

About 20 years ago I bought this.

Racing Mania
Six of EA's best racing titles in one package.
1. Nascar Road Racing
2. Sports Car GT
3. Superbike World Championship
4. Andretti Racing
5. Need for Speed II
6. Road Rash

They all worked well in Windows XP. The only one I cared about was the 1996 game Road Rash. Like many other games of the time I had to have its CD in the drive to run the game. Eventually I found an unofficial fix so that I could run it without the CD. Unfortunately, it did not work in Windows 7. About 10 years ago I found out there was a trick to getting it to work. To get it to work I had to kill Windows File Explorer, run the game, and then restart File Explorer when done. I used the following batch file to do that:

A few years ago I found a modified version of Road Rash on a game abandonware site.

With this setup I no longer needed a CD or any fix. This version even automatically killed and restored Windows Explorer.
This Windows 95/98 era game works fine in Windows 10 and 11.

Wolfenstein was the first one yeah but Doom is more iconic. I would say Doom cemented the FPS genre after it was a wrap and spawned a whole decade of FPS games like it.

I would also say thanks to Doom it the sole reason why modding games is a thing. Modding was before Doom too but it was less accessible and more primitive, initially only ppl modding games where ppl that have the skill to crack games etc. Doom was the game that made dev tools and mod tools available to the public as a normal practice.

Thanks to Doom, Modding became a normal thing for games to support.

That is pretty neat with the road rash game, i recall playing that game not sure which version lol as there is a few.

DOOM comes with it's own cheat codes. I just set it for God mode, all weapons and ammo, and then go crazy.

Those DropBox links in post #12... have everything you need for those games (including the games).
And they all include README files, that tell you how to install them... etc.

Running on Windows 11... (DOOM II - for anyone that's been living under a rock, for the past 30 years).

Sometimes you can find ports of your favorite XP games for Windows 10.

I have ALL the levels (discs). I lost count of how many levels I have.

Near the bottom of post #10... (the dropbox links), have everything needed for those games.
They work on Win 10 and 11.

Very nice indeed. I never played Doom on company network, our game of choice back then was Descent II. When I worked for a different company the IT Admin setup a separate VLAN so we could play Madden 1999 and Quake 3 Arena at lunchtime.

Yeah... those were all post-Doom games.

EVERYone needs to play Doom with a joystick or a controller.
Doom on the keyboard is fine, but with some kind of joystick or controller, Doom is... awesome.
