DirectX I think is my problem..

..but I didn't know where I should post this. Recently I tried playing larger games like The Guild Wars 2 for example. I usually just play HOG games like you find through Bigfishgames. The last few days my games have all been jerky, just not running smoothly as before. I know I changed some settings for brightness, but wasn't confident in more than that.

I remember something popping up in one of the bigger MMO games that said DirectX needed updating, something like that so I checked for driver updates in my Display drivers. I am here because I don't know how to fix the issue, and hoping someone can help me. I didn't have any luck googling for the answer so I came here.

I'll give you any further info I can, answer any questions, sure appreciate some direction. I don't want to do the bigger games any longer, just my easy HOG games are what I enjoy. Thank you in advance for any help.

Even these games are jerky? PC Games - Play Free Downloadable Games > Download Games | Big Fish that you play?

The other games you mention wont even launch if you don't have the required prerequisites in place. Hard to say at that point because it becomes more minute. If those browser games are jerky too then that suggests its more isolated to something particular which will be hard to pin point externally.

I guess also for clarity what mmo had the popup? this is not normal behavior if it sounds like how you wrote it.

In the Search box, type in ---dxdiag ---and check through each page. The latest version of DirectX is 12.
The dxdiag tool is Microsoft's built in check tool.
Note all drivers involved and ensure they are uptodate.
    Run it as Admin.

It's possible you changed something in the ATI control panel that has now messed around with your frame rate. In the ATI control panel may be a restore to default setting. You might want to try that.

Also, some of these older games may need an older DirectX .dll installed. You might be able to find that in the game's install directory with a folder called directx or support or something. You'd have to investigate the game's install path for such a folder. No, an older DirectX .dll won't overwrite your current DirectX now.

You also want to make sure you're using your dedicated GPU (Graphics Processing Unit). Not the Vega stuff which is in the CPU chip. That'll slow you down in quick order. The dedicated GPU is what you want to use. So make sure that's enabled as primary if the option exists in the ATI control panel.

For me personally, I turn off the embedded GPU in the CPU via BIOS. That way only my dedicated GPU is being used. I don't think there's any harm in that unless some software absolutely requires both GPUs to be on at the same time.

Found these videos. The first is in Windows 11, but it's essentially the same in 10.

How To Switch From Integrated GPU To Dedicated GPU On Windows 11 - YouTube

How To Force An App To Use The Dedicated GPU On Windows - YouTube

    Any questions ask.

^ it will be something along those lines because the games like guild wars wont even launch if you don't have all the right stuff in place. Could be something as simple as screen tearing or vsync related which would suggest choppy frames over a browser game and a dedicated one.

hence its minute and kind of hard to pin point to someone from an external standpoint. But would be a quick fix if you knew what to look for.

No, my bigfish games are not free-games, I don't play any free-games at all. I am able to launch all the games I've mentioned, including several I've bought on Steam. I haven't checked every game I own though, only my Bigfish, so I will do that this a.m.

yes, my version is DirectX 12, checked that yesterday. I have updated all my Drivers in "display", but if there are others I need to check, I will do that as well? Oh, I didn't run it as admin. so I'll do that this morning, thank you :)

I'll be working on all the info each of you gave me, I appreciate it so much, every response!

I'll come back and let you know on what I did, and also, more info on other games I have on Steam and how they are working. I also have a Win11 laptop with my bigfishgames, and I didn't even think to try it before I posted,

    Thank you again, gg

Well, that "seemed" to go well as my games are running great but I lost all audio. I tried a couple of youtube videos and nothing. Any ideas?

I was able to go in and change to dedicated GPU, no problem. I thought the video had no narration so I just followed the screen. The part halfway or so through where it showed him checking the Task Manager, my game, even when it was running just showed "Very Low" and I thought from the video it should show "very high". Maybe just because they are simple games than the biggies?

My win11 laptop runs the game normally so it's my PC for sure.

I'm sorry, I meant that last message more for @F22 Simpilot.

I fixed the Audio, somehow the a box was now unchecked in Audio Control I didn't do that, so it's a mystery I'll chalk it up to.

Check your audio tab by right clicking on the volume icon on the task bar and click "sounds". Because you switched to dedicated GPU it might of switched the default audio adapter because GPU can output audio.

Then click on the playback tab when the window comes up.

I fixed it, apparently, in the Audio Control. Thank you for your reply though as that helps me know I'm not losing my one, remaining marble The fact that the GPU can output audio as well, gg

The fact the game runs means DirectX and Drivers are OK. No need to worry about that.

    Options - Guild Wars 2 Wiki (GW2W)

Go in to the game settings.
    Graphics > Advanced settings:

Antialiasing - None or FXAA, higher setting wastes CPU/GPU on things you cannot see.
Shadows - Low, higher uses more CPU/GPU.
Character Model Limit/Quality - Lower will give a better performance though may not look so good.

Vertical Sync - On or Off maybe better, just experiment.
Depth Blur - Off, bit of a pointless effect.
Motion Blur - minimum, again rather pointless/irritating.

Maybe other features can be reduced, largely a matter of personal preferences and directing CPU/GPU resources to features you can actually see.

There are a whole host of sound settings, so go through all of those.

With some changes you will need to restart the game.
