Problems Installing MS Flight Simulator 2020 on New Build

I'm trying to install MSFS 2020 on a new PC. I ran the XBox app to install my copy of MSFS 2020 (DVD version bought). First problem is I can't change the default install location from drive C: to my preferred drive. I can change the game install location for the right folder from the game in the library (z:\games\msfs2020) but the install just stops with error code 0x80070002. I've reset & repaired the XBox and Gaming Services apps but no joy. Any idea what's happening here? The same thing happens if I use the default installation folder c:\xboxgames. I could install from the DVDs then update the game but this method should work.

Is your C: drive only 180GB? If so that's what your problem is because the game specs say you need at least 150GB free.

Also, if your C: drive is only 180GB then why? Ten years ago people bought small SSDs because they were very expensive. Now they are relatively cheap. You can pick up a 1 or 2 TB one for not a lot of money.

oof sorry miss read the post lol

No real defining hits for that error code 0x80070002 just a whole bunch of open ended answers online and MS support has a generic vague definition for it.

after some searching it looks like a generic code that applies to many outcomes so its just a generic code probably when the app does not know what to do for any several reasons.

Maybe try on the actual sim forum

But does your computer meet the system requirements including the free disk space?

I'm actually building a new Windows 11 PC. The C: drive is 500GB SSD and the drive I want to install MSFS 2020 on is a 1TB SSD.

I would post on the MS flight sim forum but can't do so being newly registered.

yeah typical Microsoft always has to be so convoluted with its infrastructure all the time. Jump through hoops all the time and halfthe time things don't even work properly.

I made some progress by signing into another MS account in the XBox app and Store app then back to my normal MS account. I then managed to install MSFS on the C: but it won't move it to my preferred drive.

The game installed and works. I was amazed to find all my flight logs, flight activity progress etc. has been restored without me doing anything. Where did the installer get that data? I’m only missing the large nation scenery files I can download again or just copy across the entire previous installation.

the game probably has cloud saving and it will be a .net app that installs it so it probably downloaded that data for you. idk just an assumption never played the game.

i don't use Xbox or any other Microsoft game services so i don't know exactly but i would assume it has those sorts of features in the app. well i play Minecraft but i have nothing to do with any of its integration ans use third party wrappers to download game data.

I agree, you can't install that game on a 150GB hard drive is a bit ridiculous, as you won't fit anything else. My recommendation is that you buy an SSD with 1 or 2 TB that now are not so expensive.... But yes, it seems that the main problem is the storage.
