Links 2003 install on Windows 10 version 20H2

I installed Links 2003 Golf but had a problem and can't remember how I solved it. Perhaps someone can refresh my memory (in case I ever have to install it again).

After installing Links 2003 it would not start and i got an error message telling me that I needed to enable something called (as I remember) Real Play. I did a search online and found directions that sent me to a list of Win10 items that each had a rectangular checkbox. I checked the box next to Real Play, restarted Win10 and was up and running. I (foolishly) did not bookmark or make a note of where I had been and now can't remember - was where I had been a list of "processes" or something else?

I'm sure a Win10 wizard here knows where I was and what I did to get Links 2003 running - can you refresh my memory? Internet searches are only returning stuff about Real Player ( not what I'm looking for).

    TIA for any help.

That works on my latest version of Windows 10. My usual trick is to install such old programs from an admin account and to run the installer program (e.g. setup.exe) as an administrator in the compatibility mode the game was designed foe e.g. Windows XP. You may also need to run the installed game as an administrator.

Here.... the game, the patch you need for Win 10 graphics, and the readme.txt telling you how to install.

Thanks for the replies - as far as I'm concerned, Links 2003 is by far the best computer golf game available.

The thing I'm still wondering about is "where did I go in Win 10 to find Real Play?".

Ghot: I've never seen RUKSHUK,exe before - is it by any chance the Pro Distance Mod? I've heard about that but never installed it before.

Thanks for that. I had v1.0 working fine but your patch updated my files to v 1.07. It's a pity I can't get a resolution higher than 1280 x 720.

Why do you need Real Play whatever that is?. I have Links working fine.

Unfortunately I also have some old programs that work but due to the way they were written/coded the resolution is poor, one will work only with 640x480 [a book catalog]. Some do pretty good at 1024x768. They come from the days of 4:3 resolution [think CRT monitors], not the later widescreen of 16:9 or 16:10.

I guess I don't NEED to know since Links is working fine for me - just frustrated because I can't remember what I did to get Links installed.

    Thanks for replying.

Nope. I just happened to have Links 2003 already. A bit of googling, and I found the patches to get it to work on modern computers.
