My PC Hard Freezes randomly when I'm playing video games

    Hello

As I have mentioned in the title, I'm experiencing random freezes which can only be resolved by completely shutting down the laptop. The freeze however only happens when I play video games, when I'm doing other things the laptop seems to work normally. I have noticed that when I use direct x 9 instead of direct x 10 or above I experience less freeze, but time to time my laptop still freezes. Can I have help regarding this problem? as this freeze is getting annoying especially when I play games such as Dota 2. I'm currently using Windows 1909 (OS Build 18363.1198).

    Thanks in advance

There are a number of possibilities
The main two are the driver or when under load playing games a heat situation.
    1. The latest driver is here
NVIDIA DRIVERS GeForce Game Ready Driver WHQL

However as stated that is a reference driver and as you can see Nvidia state
This is a reference driver that can be installed on supported NVIDIA notebook GPUs. However, please note that your notebook original equipment manufacturer (OEM) provides certified drivers for your specific notebook on their website. NVIDIA recommends that you check with your notebook OEM about recommended software updates for your notebook.
That said the Acer site for your computer offers only an earlier driver
Product Support | Acer United Kingdom

a 2016 dated driver = the Nvidia VGA driver, and the Intel one is in those cases the often better solution.

I suggest you check which driver you have and then if it is the 2016 one

    Version:
    10.18.13.5914

    You try the Intel one.

The procedure is you download the driver, SAVE IT do not install it.
Go settings - updates and security and pause updates for a few days - other wise Windows may automatically change that driver on updates.

Then you go Settings - apps and find the Nvidia driver entries and uninstall them
    See here
    https://docs.microsoft.com/en-gb/tro...sociated-files
You do not need to use the software DDU if you have heard of it and the best way on that laptop is the method described.

    Then you reboot the computer
and install the Intel one, if you had the earlier one and then see how it goes.

IF it is a heat situation when the system is under load, then a check of the air vents on the laptop will probably show dust build up.
However if that was the cause, it would occur NOT only on games but on any heavy graphics work.

Something else to look into. Since this is a laptop and has an Intel CPU that has the Intel HD 520 GPU. I would check in the BIOS to see if you are solely using Intel HD 520 GPU or if it's supposed to be switching between the Intel and AMD 940m. Look to set the 940m as the only GPU.

    Plankton
Good point although I think switching maybe auto on the Travel mate.
    Nvidia 940

In connection with that - see if it happens on AC power as on that it should switch whereas on battery it may NOT

I already have the latest driver for Intel and Nvidia, this means I have to uninstall them and instead use the one from my manufacturer page right?

Regarding the heat problem, I think when I play video games the temperature usually stays around 60-70 degree celcius, could that be a possible cause as well?

Can you tell me more where can I verify this information? Because I can't seem to find about my GPU at my BIOS, I accessed it from shift clicking the restart button then going to UEFI Firmware, is that the correct one?

Okay I will try this for a while, and see the result.

As far as I can see, and the Acer site for your Travel Mate is of no help, the laptop will use the Intel on battery and the Nvidia on mains power when appropriate such as gaming.

The dedicated GPU will only be activated if the device is connected to the power outlet and with a high performance plan set in Windows

Check your settings for your power plan.
On some laptops you can right click the desktop and then choose Intel/Nvidia graphic settings etc
or you can use the Nvidia control panel if you have that
NVIDIA Control Panel Windows Store App | NVIDIA

however on your Travelmate I think as I said it is fixed to automatically select on AC power and I do not think you can change it.

I believe that the settings in the power plan for battery - will not even use the Nvidia if you set high performance there.

Thanks for the reply, this means I don't have to revert my driver to the old ones correct?

Regarding the power plan I tried using High Performance days ago but the freeze still occurs. As for the Nvidia Control Panel I already have that, and I recall that I already set the preferred graphics processor to Nvidia and the freeze still happens.

So any other ideas on what might be causing the freezes? Also if there is any more information that I can provide to help, please tell me.

    1. Did you check if the freeze occurs when running on AC power
In connection with that - see if it happens on AC power as on that it should switch whereas on battery it may NOT
Okay I will try this for a while, and see the result.
    2. Please refer back to my post 2
I suggest you follow that procedure but this time use the drivers from the Acer site
    https://www.acer.com/ac/en/GB/conten...oduct/6693?b=1

I appreciate they are older, but as I said on post 2
The Acer drivers are the ones recommended as you do not have an actual card only a graphics chip for the Nvidia and as it states on the Nvidia site
Large manufacturers such as Acer, have components supplied to them for their systems and the fact that Nvidia offer a more recent driver and Intel, does not mean it is right for your Acer.
That is a weakness with Microsoft updating drivers and also a weakness with third party driver software. They find drivers using only the fact it is a Nvidia 940M -

It does not mean that it will be right for your Travelmate.

YOU MUST pause updates otherwise Microsoft windows updates - will simply install the newer drivers at the next check for updates.
