Strange problem regarding a program not opening/loading.

I have two Windows 10 os boots for different uses and need the program to open/work on windows 10 1 as windows 10 2 is used for other things.

    C: windows 10 1 - gaming/media
    D: windows 10 2 - work related.

Ive installed a game onto windows 10 1 and when i try to open " settings " which is an application file... it doesnt open or load.

I confirm this by looking in task manager nothing... i even kept an eye on task manager to see whats happening when i double click and i see " windows problem reporting" pop up for a split second and then disappears.

But thats it nothing else, i've tried compatibility, safe mode, clean boot, dism, sfc, reinstalling game...everything i can think of outside of doing a fresh windows install or system restore.

I even installed the game on Windows 10 2 just to see its not an issue with the game and it opened first time with no issues.

So the issue is not the game files its a setting on my Windows 10 1 Os.

Any ideas what i can do to resolve this to avoid a clean install/system restore ?

    thanks

    Hello @w10newbie,
Tried uninstalling and reinstalling the game.

If that doesn't fix it, run sfc and dism commands again if you didn't try RestoreHealth option before

The last thing you can try is an in-place upgrade where you choose to keep your apps and files.

Yeah SFC fixed some things but not this issue..

and Dism said there was no issues.

Also tried safe mode, clean boot mode, trying all the compatiblity settings, admin setting, everything... i've installed game 4 times makes no difference... yet as mentioned when installed on my other OS it opens no problems... so must be something on my current os settings blocking it from opening ?

Are you saying Windows Settings is not opening?

For test purposes, you should create a second local account and try installing the game there.

Again this is the best option of the 3 being fresh install, system restore point and in place install but again i have so many settings configured to my liking even the thought of having to do this for one tiny issue is unthinkable.

If it cant be fixed with a file replacement/setting ill just install it on my work os or make another profile will be inconvenient but a lot less so than fresh installs.

No i was saying it must be a setting or issue on my current OS stopping the program from launching as it launches fine on my other Os boot.

Did you check to see if antivirus is blocking it? What antivirus do you use? And is there a VPN involved here?

Both Windows versions are Windows 10 2004? How about video and other drivers? Anything you can think of that's different?

Yeah not Antivirus both OS have same one and i've tried disabling just incase and VPN is not loaded.

Im usually quite good at troubleshooting issues or finding a solution but this one is very strange to me.

In that case I can't think of anything at the moment. I've had to resort to in-place upgrade/repair which I couldn't fix any other way after much time trying.

Maybe someone else will see this and have other ideas.

Nothing at all tbh, both have the latest updates and same drivers etc as they use the same hardware and for the most part i would have configured both OS pretty much the same.

Hopefully yeah! thanks for your help though nothing worse than one tiny issue being the cause of a full clean install.

You're welcome and one last thing to think about :
Learning to make a full backup will take the fear and risk out of trying an in place repair upgrade Backup and Restore with Macrium Reflect
