so it turns out l may not have turned off hardware acceleration on my gaming laptop (l have another non-gaming laptop which it is turned off on), it somewhat stands to reason that discord might be getting confused at the fact my laptop has two GPUs.
l dont know if it will fix the issue as it was intermittent, so its a matter of keeping things under observation and follow the advice l got from discord support (which got back to me after l was gifted a nitro).
