There's not many ways to write on discs, one is hand-written with a Sharpie permanent marker, one is disc size stick-on labels made for the purpose [Avery?] and the other is LightScribe. LightScribe requires an ODD that can do it and requires a program used to create the data. The disc is burned then reversed in the tray and the program is used to create the label then burns it to the special coating. My program and discs came from HP and the packages are marked as such as is the faceplate of the ODD's tray.

Avery is a firm that produces labeling products such as address labels, jar labels for canners, etc.

NEVER use paper labels! They can flake off and wind up inside a CD/DVD drive and potentially cause permanent damage.

Lightscribe never caught on. It was slow and limited.

I do a lot of audio CD burning for my recording studio clients. I use ink jet printable CD-R's and have a Primera Bravo model disc printer, to print the labels on discs.

    unforunately i don't have a printer.

i keep that in mind about paper labels.

im assuming dry escape type pens are a no go?

    interesting.

    i installed lightscribe.

    what should i do next?

i tried installing it, it didn't seem like it wanted to work. are there updates for it?

    any other programs?

what about formatting the disc? is there to recover the lost space? i messed up on one after i forgot to change the name of the cd after you right click properties and then you see a space to type the name in? for me it gives me invalid permission. so i couldn't change it from there.

I still have a WinXP and Win7 computer and LightScribe works on them but as the page I linked said it doesn't work on my Pro version of Win10.

Some basics about Optical Discs, on DVDs the - and + were competing formats that eventually for consumers came together. The - has no significance on CDs, just a divider and there is no + on them.

The important part is R and RW, R indicates Recordable, once [unless a program can do differently] and the RW is ReWriteable, can be erased and used again. The RW is more like a disk drive, if not closed in the burning process usually can have more data added but I've never had a need to use them that way.

CDs have a capacity of 700MB, older ones were 650MB, DVDs have about 4.2GB or the DL/Dual-Layer has about 8GB but may need a newer burner to use them.

The R discs format 'on-the-fly' while the RW usually need formatting first.

You need a Lightscribe drive to be able to burn lightscribe labels. HP, as far as I know, was the only company that sold lightscribe capable drives. Standard CD/DVD burners will not burn lightscribe labels.

I have salvaged/usable ODDs on hand that can do LightScribe and 3 are HP but 2 are labeled HL LiteON. I think I recall a computer that has an LG drive but its not setup just now.

I'll keep using the DL drives as I can download Win10 .iso file using the MCT and the third choice of both x86 and x64 then burn to one DVD, easier that 2 discs in the tool kit. I do the same with the Bootable USB drive and 8GB or 16GB. Both need between 6 and 7 GB.
