That's the new Amazon backed MMO isn't it? Regardless I would be reluctant to pre-purchase any game/ software these days, just look at Fallout 76 and Red Dead Redemption 2, major problems with initial launch, ongoing issues taking a long time to fix, lots of people still can't even launch RDR 2 still.
Having said all that New World looks interesting and maybe it will be a decent game, time will tell.

That's just fear mongering. Yeah, new game releases can have issues but they could also not have issues. It also depends on hardware and OS installed.

Case in point. There were lots of complaints about Outer Worlds game being buggy and broken when bought from the Microsoft Store. Unfortunately a lot issues had to do with people still running older version of Windows 10 despite the fact that the system specs requires the Windows 10 May 2019 update (1903). BTW I just finished the game on ultra settings without a single crash or performance issue. Not one.

Another big issue is overclockers - Many people overclock their system to get good benchmark scores but fail to realize those overclocks don't play well with games. It's why many of the informed overclocker who are also gamers de-tune their rigs for gaming. It's one thing to run a benchmark on an overclocked system for 5 minutes, it's another to run a game on that overclocked system for hours+

Anyway, that New World game looks promising but May 2020 is a long ways away.

It's not fear mongering, its a fact, and I said I would be reluctant, I didn't say no one should pre purchase, it's just my opinion.
There is plenty of evidence of games being released in very buggy conditions, GTA5, RDR2, Fallout 76 and even Outer Worlds, the developers eventually identified a bug which caused companions to die from falling damage, which they say is impossible but was still happening, the fix was easy and quickly put out.
That wasn't because people were overclocking or running older versions of Windows and not everyone encountered the bug because it was situationally dependant.
Again it's just my opinion that I personally would be reluctant to pre purchase.
Here is the article, makes interesting reading,

As one who "actually" played the game, I had absolutely no issues with Outer Worlds. None. And I just finished the game last night. And BTW I played the entire game with accompanied companions and not one died because of a ladder. And I bought the game earlier this month (Dec).

And yeah, I read about the purported constant crashes and game breaking bugs prior to getting the game. I even heard the warning about staying away from getting it at the Microsoft store. I ignored all that. Why... because I knew my system was ready for the game. It didn't disappoint and the game ran beautifully on my system. And I'm not making this up when I say not one crash.

Anyway just because someone posts an issue doesn't mean everyone will have the issue. And just like an OS's gets patches, so do games, and anything else software. Even hardware get's firmware updates. Why... because nothing's perfect.

All that said, yes, I've had buggy game breaking games. I've even threw a game away because it that didn't run well one AMD cards, but that was a known issues I chose to ignore (developer intentionally optimized for NVidia cards only). But that's the nature of the beast at times; In the end I've had far more success than bad.

BTW I buy newly released games all the time and have no visions of stopping the practice. That's me.

    Peace

Going by your number (which I dispute) you can count me in as the percentage who don't feel that way

Anyway we all have our "opinions" so moving along...

I just want to add this last bit,

As a gamer, I use to host game threads at sevenforums.com all the time and in fact still have my "Tips on Troubleshooting Game Issues" stickied there. I'm not one for sugar coating or denying issues when they actually exist.

    Some of my threads...
