Playing a game then my monitor went crazy, whats the cause?

    Hi

I was playing a game, then my screen went black and i had a "No signal" message on my monitor. Moments later the screen came back on but there was glitches and visual issues all over my screen (see attached image).

I managed to restart the PC and now its all fine again with no issues (so far).

But i can't ignore it, i need to know what is the cause to prevent it happening again.

Things i have done so far:
    Ran windows update,
    Reinstalled my GPU drivers.

So far so good but i don't know if it will happen again or not. Whats the usual culprit of issues like this so i can double check and make sure its all fine?

Are you overclocking your graphics card? When I pushed my overclock a bit too much I got the same thing. A restart always fixed it. If you are not overclocking the card then it might just be overheating. Try cleaning the computer and card. Or increase the card's fan speed.

I'm not overclocking, but i guess it might need a good clean. Do you know what is the best software for checking temps?

I use Corsair Link since it came with my CPU watercooler. But try a search and you'll find a few programs to monitor the temps. Good luck with solving the issue.

Your graphics card temp looks good in that picture. But I think when you are playing your game it's heating up the card and that's when you get the problem. Try cleaning the computer and the card. You can try running GPUTemp while playing your game and see how hot the card is getting. You can also try running with the side panel off of your computer for a while. If the problem goes away after a cleaning and running with the panel off then you can bet it's a heat issue. Like I said earlier I had the same issue with heat when I overclocked my card a bit too much.

If your graphics card did not come with a program to adjust the fan speeds (Most do) you can download a free program called Speedfan. It will allow you to monitor GPU fan speeds as well as adjust them. You might need to increase the fan speeds a bit while playing games. I have an XFX R9 390X and I usually turn up the fan speeds a bit when I get ready to play a game. Then I turn them down after I am finished. I find that the automatic fan settings in most GPU software doesn't keep my GPU cool enough.

I see all the fans are running make sure they aren't loaded up with dust bunnies!

I dust bust mine twice a year and it amazes me how much dust comes out of the damn thing.

Okay so I reseated my gpu and ram slots. I've dusted it all clean, wasnt too dusty anyway and this is what I have when I load up.

Does this mean my gpu has died?

It sure looks like it. Sorry to hear that. If it's under warranty you might try getting it replaced.

Maybe some settings might have changed somehow...might want to check the card's software. Nvidia has the Control Panel. It should be installed so you may have the option to restore default settings before you declare the card dead.
