Trouble installing old game to new PC

I know it can be tricky to install a very old game to a new PC, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't, but I'm hoping to install a game that I used to play when I was young and I know my niece will enjoy playing it too, its a game called Hidden Pictures Workshop, I think it was released around 1995 as the system requirements don't even mention Windows 98, so you can imagine that it doesn't require any effort to run on a modern PC.
When I try to install it I get this message:
THE PROGRAM OR FEATURE "\??\H:\SETUP.EXE" CANNOT START OR RUN DUE TO INCOMPATIBILITY WITH 64-BIT VERSIONS OF WINDOWS. PLEASE CONTACT THE SOFTWARE VENDOR TO ASK IF A 64-BIT WINDOWS COMPATIBLE VERSION IS AVAILABLE.
I have had it running before on Windows 7, but when I tried it yesterday on a Windows 7 laptop I got the same message. Is there any way I can get it to install and run on Windows 10?

Hi, you'd most probably need to run it in a 32 bit virtual machine.

There is this, but it's only valid for 30 day periods.
Hyper-V - Add Windows XP Mode Virtual Machine in Windows 10

If you have an old license for Windows XP, say, you can install that in a VM.

I do still have a disc for Windows XP, but am not sure how to install that in a VM.

A search engine can be a great help:

Windows (Pro upwards) offers Hyper V; there are 3rd party VM's as well
    Oracle VM VirtualBox

    https://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2087-hyper-v-virtualization-setup-use-windows-10-a.html

Windows 10 Pro, Education and Enterprise editions come with a built-in hypervisor client Hyper-V allowing users to create and run other operating systems on a virtual machine. Although Hyper-V is mainly designed to run Windows guests it can also be used to virtually install other operating systems like various Linux versions.

I'm not sure whether this will be helpful, but...

Win10 X64 cannot run 16 bit software. Some 32 bit software uses a 16 bit installer. I'd guess that the game is in the latter category.

The advice you have been given is good. Maybe you could run the game under a 32 bit version of Windows 10 in a VM, but XP might be better. (How about Win 95?) I hope that it's worth the trouble.

Retro Gaming is coming back. There are machines being refurbed to run 98 on them. Check out the Vintage Computer marketplace on FB.

The system requirements say (from a CD for sale on Amazon) "SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS Windows 3.1, Windows 95..." so it's going to be a 16-bit app (because so is Windows 3.1). That cannot run on 64-bit Windows, but 16-bit apps will run on 32-bit Windows. A cheap low spec second hand machine running 32-bit Windows 10 may be one solution.

There's another potential problem. The game may require the CD to be present for DRM purposes, and that is a problem in Windows 10...

Windows 10 won’t run older games that use SafeDisc or SecuROM DRM. These digital rights management schemes can cause quite a few problems. Overall, it’s a good thing that Windows 10 doesn’t allow this junk to install and pollute your system. Unfortunately, it does mean that some older games that came on physical CDs or DVDs won’t install and run normally.

There are a lot of other good tips in that How-To Geek link, including using DosBox to run 16-bit apps on Windows 10....

And, since Windows 3.1 itself was basically a DOS application, you can install Windows 3.1 in DOSBox and run old 16-bit Windows 3.1 applications, too.

    Here's one I made earlier....

As far as I remember it does need the disc to run, but I'll have a look into the above options, thanks to everyone who has offered me advice.

I've just seen this and hadn't realised the thread was still open, what I did was got hold of an old laptop running XP, was sold as seen and luckily works, and only cost £20, so was a cheap solution, and am now able to run this old game and a few others too.
