Some steam games will not launch

When I launch some games, they do not open with video; the audio plays but the video is just flashing static that looks like my screen is going to crash. This doesn't happen with every game, just some of them. I don't think it's to do with graphics settings because it can run The Sims 4 (not on steam) and Stardew Valley (on steam) perfectly fine, but Warhammer Dawn of War Soulstorm (an older game also from steam) will not run properly. I've tried all the generic FAQ solutions on both steam and SEGA but nothing has helped. I have a video of what happens but I do not know how to link it. Thanks for any help :)

Hi Toaster. What monitor do you have it running at? Have you tried this: Locate the game folder and run GraphicsConfig.exe, change to windowed mode in the box.

You double click or right click and hit run on GraphicsConfig.exe in DoW Soulstorm's under Steam/steamapps/common/Dawn of War. In the configuration box you mark the windowed mode option. If it can run in windowed mode then it may explain a few things or make the troubleshooting easier. What other games does not run for you by the way? Is it only in DoW?

Hi,

I ran the graphics configuration test and it worked in a window and its saved the settings i think? I shall try and see if it works, because i hadnt done that before. This happens with games that i bought previously on steam (spore and the forest) but not with stardew which i bought on my new laptop.

UPDATE it worked when windowed

i dont know how to work windowed apps but thats ok! It did not run a successful graphics config when not windowed, just took it to flashing static again. The computer recommended changing the resolution and refresh rate, whats your opinion?

Windowed mode forces game applications into the desktop refresh rate and resolution and not the game's own profile. So this may be an issue in how the games are trying to run that either your monitor, Windows, some function around it or a combination of both doesn't comprehend properly. But what do you mean when the computer is recommending you to change the resolution and refresh rate exactly? Could you list your PC make & model? By the way if you hit Alt + Enter it will force games in either fullscreen or windowed mode, depending on what you are currently set at.
