GAMERS, which OS do you use?

GAMERS, I'm going to build an inexpensive gaming machine and I started to wonder about the OS. I'm interested in knowing if I gamers run Linux (Ubuntu) or does it have to be windows? I have to pay for Window and I can get Linux for free...and since I don't do any gaming, I thought I would ask before I proceed. Thanks for responding.

There are some games for Linux, even Steam has a section for Linux but Linux has own problems in that field. Proper drivers for most hardware and inability to use all drivers in different distros. Inability of SW to work on all/most Linux distros would force developers to make/port same game several times. Just not practical and would be great expense. Than there's a lack of DirectX and related APIs in Linux that would be hard to replace.

If you want to use Linux for games you should get Proton: https://www.protondb.com/

    What is Proton?

Proton is a new tool released by Valve Software that has been integrated with Steam Play to make playing Windows games on Linux as simple as hitting the Play button within Steam. Underneath the hood, Proton comprises other popular tools like Wine and DXVK among others that a gamer would otherwise have to install and maintain themselves. This greatly eases the burden for users to switch to Linux without having to learn the underlying systems or losing access to a large part of their library of games. Proton is still in its infancy so support is inconsistent, but regularly improving.

It would be nice to be able to run games on Linux, that's for sure, but it's pretty limited. Way back when I got a Linux version of Quake working well. Probably the only one that ever did.

Pretty much Windows is it when it comes to games. Win10 has game add-ons that can give you trouble. Namely Game Bar and GameDVR. They ~can~ be disabled and games will work better. Otherwise win7 still has some life left in it and will do the best with games at this point. Though Windows 10 will run any game usually without problem, I'm actually amazed it runs some of my really old games I still like to play once in a while.

I just leave Windows Update do it's scheduled run, I don't do "Check for Updates" because of the risk.

Windows 10 is overall, a great OS for gaming. I could've said the same for Windows 7 but unfortunately it's time is nearing and thus would never recommend it anymore.

I actually considered Linux too but the selection of games is limiting me.

Because of the topic matter of this forum I think you'l find that the majority of people use Windows 10, although some do use Linux as an aside.

Linux and win10 pro are not built for games. Choose win 10 if it's just for games. I use win10 for games and multimedia purpose.
