    Steam ??? poll

    curious what you think of steam?
    personally I think it sucks, always updating, games take hours to upload many other things. I would rather just install a game from a disc and go play it!

    Been using Steam more or less since it was released. I much prefer a system that updates your games to the old way of having to hunt for patches.

    A lot of machines simply do not have optical media these days, mine included. For large game downloads I usually leave the PC on over night to do it's thing;.

    I would rather play games without having to use Steam.

    OP = Original Post.

    Don't use it any more as it has grown into an attempt to monopolise game distribution.

    What exactly are you uploading to Steam that take hours? Steam's servers (here where I live anyway) gives me full access to my 100 mbit/s up/down, and consistent 6 MB/s download speed for games for hours. This all depends on what servers you are connected to, so I can see why this may be an issue if you're on a bad one.

    "Always updating"? You mean the games or the client? Game updates are dependent on the game developer/publisher, not much on the service. You will get just as much updates for the game on any other service (Uplay ;origin). If you don't like it you can disable updates for each game on Steam. For client updates there's an update roughly one per month to address issues and features that's on circa 40 - 60 MB.

    Digital distribution and streaming is the future for games, for reasons both good and bad. Today it's hard to find a modern title that you can actually physically put into the ROM and install on PC. If you do, chances are that only half of the content is provided on disc and the rest as a download. PC games has gone this route now for years and Steam has been there since day one, while other companies, like Eletronic Arts, Ubisoft, Activision, - followed the steps as the rise in digital distribution and sales kept going up. If you think Steam sucks today you should see it anno 2005 as it wasn't popular for many of the same reasons you posts here. But that was over a decade ago, thing has changed, so has video games. Personally, having games located on a place where I can download and play on multiple PCs with a single click, don't have to worry about the hassle of swapping and using discs, finding the right patches for each games and to open my manual to find the correct CD-key, is great. We usually say it's easier before, but I find it overall* easier today with digital distribution to be honest.

    With that said, it's not all peachy. Going digital has also led to various measures in DRM, monopoly and corruption in distribution, less quality control and care by the distributors. But I guess that's the thing, it will never be perfect, nothing ever will. Having accepted that I find Steam to be a fine service. I also use GoG, Origin, Uplay and Bnet aswell. GoG is probably the closest you find to a place where you can download and install games DRM-free.
