    Trouble running SimCity 3000

Today I installed SimCity 3000 onto my PC, the setup went fine but when I try to start the game it asks me to run it as an administrator, I don't know why it asks this but I do it anyway, but after I do that nothing happens at all. In the games' properties menu I did select the option 'Run in 640x480 Screen Resolution' and the screen goes black for a few seconds but that is the closest I can get it to start. I know it is an old game which is designed to run on Windows 98 and XP so I did run the compatibility troubleshooter and it recommended I run it for Windows XP but still no joy, anyone got any ideas, will it be able to run on a Windows 10 PC?

You can start by installing older directx:
Download DirectX End-User Runtimes (June 2010) from Official Microsoft Download Center

I had similar issue and that worked for me.

I downloaded and installed the Direct X, but still nothing happens. When I click the SimCity icon it should ask for the disc if it is not already inserted, but it doesn't even do that. Is it possible that the disc may not be working properly anymore?

    Hello all,

If you are on Windows 10 and have a disc version of the game, then sadly you will not be able to install the game. If you are about to purchase the game, I would recommend checking out GoG.com.

If you have any further questions, please reach out to an Advisor.

    Thanks!

I have installed it but that is as far as I have got, although it is a disc version that I has bought years ago. But how come these won't work on Windows 10?

Blame SecuROM for not working on Windows 10. The GoG Version is DRM-free and will work. You can try this though: SimCity 3000 compatibility fixes - PCGamingWiki Community

I looked on the compatibility fixes page and download the file that says will make it work, but still nothing happens so I reckon I will download the game from GOG, I haven't come across this site before, and I found SimCity on there, which says it will run on all versions of Windows, so it looks like problem solved, thanks to all those who have offered advice.

GoG is great by the way. I use it all the time. But this is a good example why DRM is bad for consumers. It make games unplayable once the activation period is over and no one is there to support it further. In this case Microsoft decided to block SecuROM and SafeDisc due to security concerns on Windows 10. Unfortunately this creates a major issue for older games utilizing it. I don't have the knowledge to bypass this. The best and safest way to get it working is to buy it on GoG. Of course this means you have to buy something you already own. Other option is to create a VM (virtual machine) and try to get it working there.
