Problem starting games since the 1803 update

Since the 1803 update I've been getting intermittent failures to start Steam and Origin Games. I get the error message:_

"DirectX failed to initialise. This game requires at least a DirectX11-level graphics card, and a version of Windows which supports DirectX11 (WindowsXP is not supported). Error code: -2147024882."

and the game will not start. With the slightly older Origin game I get the same message except it it for DirectX10.

Resetting the computer solves the problem temporarily and the game/s will then start as normal. Nothing has changed on the system other than the 1803 update. I am running a Mesh computer with AMD Ryzen 7, 16Gb memory and use a Geforce GTX980 Ti video card which is more than capable of handling such games.

In case the problem continues to occur, has anyone any ideas as to how 1803 is causing this problem, and if I can do anything about it?

    Regards,Bob

Look for a REDISTRIBUTABLES folder inside one of these games and re-run the Direct-x installer. Or get the latest Direct-x runtime from Microsoft and re-run it.

OK, I'll give that a try. Thanks.

Also try reinstalling your graphics drivers. After the update my 1070 Ti appeared to be fine, but then I started to get occasional "cannot initialise" errors. Something about the migration doesn't seem to work flawlessly for the nvidia drivers, when I reinstalled the summary stated that no drivers were currently installed (which they obviously were).

OK. I keep the drivers up to date with Geforce Experience - so I'll keep an eye on that for updates and make sure they are installed a.s.a.p. It tells me I have the latest one at the moment - dated 24/4/2018 - so maybe there'll be one along soon - I can't be the only one affected.

I mean just reinstall the current one, you don't need to wait for a new release.

Right - that's simple enough. I'll try that now. Thanks.

    - After driver installation, Device Manager may report Code 43 error on a few GTX 1060 cards models.
    - Netflix playback may occasionally stutter.
    - Added support for Microsoft Surface Book notebooks.
    - Windows 10: Driver may get removed after PC has been left idle for an extended period of time.

Hmmm. Still on 397.31 here - and the software says it#s the latest for this card, so I'd better wait until it's "official" before changing drivers.

Do you by any chance leave your computer running all the time Bob? Does a reboot fix the issue? If so, the hotfix mentioned by jrolson may be the fix here, as from the thread for this over on Guru3D there are definitely people complaining about games not being able to launch etc. with 397.31 after the system had been on for a time. I think this may actually be the cause of some issues I was getting in Firefox with crashing tabs, so I'll be updating to 397.55 myself.
