    Looking for racing game recommendations.....

OK, so first I'll go ahead and make it clear that I suck at racing. I'm normally accustomed to RPGs, action/adventure, and FPS titles. But I'd like to try something different. I last remember playing an NFS title on PC many years ago, something where you could play as either the cops or a criminal, can't even remember what it's called. Right now I'm testing Forza Horizon 3, it's OK but the burnouts and crashes aren't very realistic. The rest of the game is realistic and graphics are great, but it can lag at times, especially when playing offline while connected to the Net. It properly detects my GTX 1080 and sets everything to ultra, but it still gets noticeably slow at times. Either the game isn't well optimized or my PC/OS needs more optimization. It also doesn't have as many circuit races as I would like, though I'm not strictly looking for circuit racing.

    What I'm looking for are:
    1. A modern title with real vehicles
    2. Top-end graphics
    3. Mixture of offroad, street, and circuit racing
    4. Realistic driving physics and handling, like for instance it would be harder to drive on wet roads so the game reflects this properly
    5. Realistic crashes and burnouts
    6. Gets the adrenaline pumping, sweaty hands, need for quick reaction times, etc.
    7. Doesn't constantly torment you for every mistake you make, I like a mix of realism and fun
    8. Range of difficulties from very easy to nearly impossible
    9. Preferably available on Steam, Origin is also OK, would like to avoid the Windows Store if possible
    10. Multiplayer that is still active and played by alot of people

Can't think of anything else ATM, any suggestions are welcomed.....

    Thanks!

I’d be interested to hear this too. I get the impression GT sport fits most of your criteria but it may be a console only game. On steam I believe Stock Car Extreme is supposed to be excellent.

i know you said modern titles but I always loved the Geoff Crammond Grand Prix games. The last one ‘Grand Prix 4’ is still excellent

You have Steam Store, plenty of titles in there.

    Project CARS 2

    1. A modern title with real vehicles
    2. Top-end graphics
    3. Mixture of offroad, street, and circuit racing
    4. Realistic driving physics and handling, like for instance it would be harder to drive on wet roads so the game reflects this properly
    5. Realistic crashes and burnouts Damage levels can be set
    6. Gets the adrenaline pumping, sweaty hands, need for quick reaction times, etc.
    7. Doesn't constantly torment you for every mistake you make, I like a mix of realism and fun AI levels settable
    8. Range of difficulties from very easy to nearly impossible
    9. Preferably available on Steam, Origin is also OK, would like to avoid the Windows Store if possible
    10. Multiplayer that is still active and played by a lot of people

iRacing checks the following boxes. Its a bit expensive though being subscription based, but the upside to that is that everyone has done an investment and isn't going to ruin it by running people of the track, its dead serious racing and everyone is racing for the best result possible.

    1. A modern title with real vehicles

    2. Top-end graphics (its not bad looking, but its not the best either. its a sim, graphics really don't need to be top notch)
    3. Mixture of track racing, oval, rallycross, dirt oval
    4. Realistic driving physics and handling (no weather though, day-night cycle is coming this year)
    5. Realistic crashes and burnouts
    6. Gets the adrenaline pumping, sweaty hands, need for quick reaction times, etc.
    7. Doesn't constantly torment you for every mistake you make, I like a mix of realism and fun its hard and unforgiving, but once you get used to it and become somewhat fast is hella fun and rewarding
    8. Range of difficulties from very easy to nearly impossible
    9. Preferably available on Steam, Origin is also OK, would like to avoid the Windows Store if possible
    10. Multiplayer that is still active and played by alot of people

Its not for everyone, it requires a bit of commitment, I'm now in a league championship that races every monday for 1 whole season (1 season is 12 weeks). And it requires me to spend atleast 1 or 2 hours in the week before setting up the car and learning the track to be somewhat competitive.

I second Project Cars 2. A fun game with great graphics, realistic driving model with ton of variations, high replay value and probably the best roster of GT cars and tracks to race them on. It got offroad rallycross and circuit racing with real cars and tracks, with seasons, dynamic weather, day and night cycle, snow, ice, rain and mud. It's a bit buggy, but the developers are releasing a substantial game patch every month (a new update comes out this February). iRacing is probably one of the best, but it's expensive and extremely punishing. Forza Motorsport 7 and Forza Horizon 3 are fun simcade titles, imo Horizon 3 is the best of the two. Both are very accessible. Raceroom is crazy, as it's a free-to-play game, but a very good one. It got the best audio in any racing game to date. Assetto Corsa is also a good one with one of the best driving model out there. In terms of diversity I'd say get PC2. And it's available on Steam, so is AC and Raceroom. Forza is only available on the Microsoft Store.
