I hope you guys aren't using gfe on a regular basis and this is just for testing? I am always recommended settings above or below an acceptable framerate. That program never gets it right. It tells me for Kingdom Come Deliverance ultra quality for most settings, even when the game clearly states that ultra is for future hardware. Not something my 1070 can handle well, other than for taking screenshots and enjoying the scenery.
Frankly, I'd be more upset if I had to frequently hunt for acceptable FPS running a 1080 TI at 1080P, assuming it's a properly coded and optimized game. That's one of the main reasons I have this config, to avoid having to look for acceptable FPS. IMHO a 1080 TI should be able to handle any Nvidia eye candy you throw at it at 1080P and even 1440P. Generally (definitely doesn't include FFXV issues) that's the way it is for me at 1080P. But to your point, I'd say some of the GFE settings and graphic features are Nvidia marketing. HFTS shadows come to mind. Significant performance hit and it's not quite clear to these old eyes what the benefit is. I do make adjustments to GFE in some cases.

Here is an example of how much the Spectre & Meltdown OS patches are affecting gaming performance. Check out the difference in minimum FPS and how smooth the frametime graphs are with Spectre and or Meltdown disabled. I hope MS can improve the patches in the future to have less of a performance footprint...
    That looks more than UGLY.

It clearly shows a difference in the benchmark but I actually found it hard to notice a difference in game when I played some Odyssey tonight. I don't think I could go permanently without the Spectre patches and it's a hassle to turn it on and off.

Strange that it doesn't offer you DSR then? I mean you can just crank everything up in 1080p without the need of gfe. For my 1070 I can see that it offers me DSR in many games. 4K and ultra in MGS5?! Haha no way Nvidia… Never going to get 60fps with that. And MGS5 benefits from running at high framerate.

HFTS is just a more refined version of PCSS by the way. It replaces shadow maps for traced ones. Basically the shadows are sharper and more precise at a distance. It's one of those luxury settings you can turn on if you have enough GPU headroom.

LOL. Bow or gun? If bow, I would expect it took several arrows.

Yes, GFE offers me DSR, not all games but many of the ones I have. It typically suggests DSR (2X) plus cranked up options at recommended settings.
