    Laptop ram question (Mhz)

    Good morning.

I helped my Nephew out with his computer, did a lot of maintenance. His computer has 4GB of ram, and just after startup, half of his RAM is being used for background programs. So, time for an upgrade.

Refresh my memory (pun intended). Right now his ram is 800mhz. If I upgrade his RAM, which is, replace his two 2GB chips for two 4GB chips, and those chips were 1600mhz chips (same RAM type), would they still work? Or would I have to find 800mhz chips instead. He has a Dell Latitude E6530. I have CPUID installed, but it told me what RAM he had (PC3-1280) but not if the 1600mhz would work.

    Thanks for your help.

Hi Outsider418. If the computer can't use the higher speed it will just use a lower speed. The memory has to be same Pin configuration.

Before updating find the spec for that box and ensure it can be pushed to 8GB. Memory uses power and using more memory in a slot than it was designed for can have negative consequences.

Usually Notebooks/Laptops have 1 or 2 slots for RAM modules although I have one with the first slot on the opposite side of the motherboard from the second slot, harder to change the first. It's best to use 2 identical modules and up to the maximum of the device. Also, if wanting to use dual-channel access with pairs of modules you may need to access the BIOS to Enable it.

I also use Crucial for my RAM needs, have had to send back only once and that was because a Dell Dimension 2300 Series does not include the Dell Dimension 2350 model. Easy cross-shipment of the replacement. Or maybe it was the 2450, memory getting harder to recall.
