No, that's not it. I have just downloaded the latest Realtek HD audio drivers to try and tell you, but in order to install them I have to uninstall the old drivers and restart my PC. Right now the PC is busy so I'll do it sometime later and let you know.

I couldn't find anything. It used to do so automatically.

My wife has the same Realtek ALC892 chip but on a different motherboard, an Asus P8Z77-V Pro, using the Microsoft driver from 10/24/2016 and her's switches between them properly, like mine used to. Then again, she also has two different devices listed, one for Speakers and another for Headphones, with the enabled device switching. I only have Speakers listed.

The only device I have listed is Speakers, which is what the master volume controls. I don't have a separate device for Headphones.

HUh strange not sure what could be going on there , i have the same chipset you have and have several different devices listed even my headphones i do it all from that place i told you, and they all hold the volume i put them at.

Thanks. If you can find out how to fix that, that would be great. My headphones are very sensitive, so I have to have the volume set to 8% with them.

It seems to differ based on motherboard implementation. My wife has the same chipset on the older P8Z77-V Pro, and she has a separate listing for Speakers and Headphones (and Realtek Digital Output). On my Z170-A I only have the listing for Speakers (and also the Digital Output).

I have another P8Z77-V Pro that needs to be RMAed because the jack detection doesn't work. Why the soundcard needs to tell me what I have plugged in, as opposed to the other way around, I don't know.

Of course it does matters what the exact Realtek chipset and implementation (desktop of notebook). The desktop implementations always give much more settings than their notebook counterparts. Mine is Realtek ALC887 @ Intel Cougar Point PCH - High Definition Audio Controller [B-3] (in simple terms Realtek ALC887 HD audio card on Asus P8H61 motherboard, a desktop implementation).
