It's a good starting point though, troubleshooting "Unknown device" is worst. Just remembered how many times I had to "Insert disk" for a driver during installation of XP.
I remember when installing Windows XP I made sure I kept the files locally in a folder so I don't have to insert that CD all the time. Worst of all if the CD-ROM had not drivers yet and you could not use the CD! (This last one happened when moving XP to new hardware or in system failure cases)

I don't normally use VLC as I prefer to have k-lite codecs installed so I can play and record in any format from any application. But as far as I can remember you can change that in the sound settings. You have to tell VLC to pass-through the Dolby Digital and DTS data to the HDMI or SPDIF, whatever you are using. The same is the case in other applications such as Cyberlink PowerDVD. You have to configure the sound settings inside the application before you can hear the sound the way you want. What is configured in Windows is irrelevant.

But now it seems realtek spdif just can't play dts dolby decoded sound

Even when I try built-in test in windows settings no success

I don't use digital sound as I have a simple pair of stereo speakers, but I saw that below. Could it help?

Do you have the latest VLC? Try updating to the latest version. Also see if you can add plugins/codecs to play Dolby Digital and DTS. I use AC3 Filter.

PS: Just tested, I can see the levels when testing the digital output... If you don't something is wrong with the drivers. Try uninstalling, restart, and then install again.
