    I've been trying both for the past few days... 7986 is definitely better sounding.

    It could just be some bug fixes, but it doesn't hurt to have the newest driver installed... Of course there are some exceptions, but the rule is the newer the better.

    Yes I've seen build 7997 is availble on at least one site on the web. Trouble is it's not a generic one as it contains Dolby.

    I have installed those Dolby ones on devices that dont have Dolby support and it ran fine. Do you have a link for 7997?

    yes I have installed it (downloaded from softpedia 8000_PG454_Win10_Win8.1_Win8_Win7_WHQL.zip)

    Yes I noticed a post that version 6.0.1.8000 was out on another site. I finally couldn't resist and downloaded from Softpedia. It's a good sounding driver, it should be up on the Microsoft Update Catalog within a few days.
