Latest Realtek HD Audio Driver Version [archive]

hi all,
im getting a bit lost and wonder if someone has been able to solve the issue im facing:

im running Win10 (64bit) and up until the anniversary update my audio was working fine and sending to my receiver over SPDIF so I was getting surround sound perfectly.

however since the anniversary update, this isnt working anymore. I use the AC3Filter codec and now its showing "SPDIF status: disabled (SPDIF output is not supported)" I tried the LAV codec(installed k-lite mega pack) as well but still no surround.

I downloaded the Realtek High Definition Audio driver 6.0.1.7950 for Windows Anniversary
but when i do update driver and let it search the folder i extracted the downloaded files to, Windows says that what i have is the latest.
when i try manually, I dont know which INF file to select out of the many there are. trying a few randomly only got my the BSOD a few times.

I have a pretty dated Asus Mobo: M4A88T-M

if anyone can share some advice id greatly appreciate it.

I always download the latest .zip file from the Realtek ftp server the you just unzip it to a temporary directory and run the setup.exe file. This will automatically install the correct version for your system, you don't have to play around with .inf files.

The above is just my preference. However if you want to install from the .cab file you downloaded just unpack it to a temporary directory, go to Device Manager and double click Sound, video and game controllers. In the expanded list you should see Realtek High Definition Audio. Right click on it and select Update Driver Software, select the Browse my computer for driver software. in the box type in the location of the directory you unpacked the .cab file to and let it run. This will automatically select the correct .inf for your system

I do exactly the same, just unzip it to a temporary directory and run the setup.exe file... and no problems whatsoever. No need to fiddle around with other things, imho. But, to each their own... just think it's much easier this way.

Well, I'm running out of options here. My subwoofer has never worked well under Windows 10. The Realtek configuration utility will play its test tones through the subwoofer, but Windows itself just ignores it. Everything is tinny and horrible. I've followed the instructions here to get the latest version of the drivers ( I went with the Realtek zip, as recommended above), and tried using both the Windows Playback Devices dialog and the Realtek HD Audio Manager to try to coax some sound out of it, but it just won't play ball.

Is my configuration weird, or is this common? Should I just abandon my analogue speakers and amp and get some sort of digital doohickey?

Edit: For reference, my Mobo is a Gigabyte 990XA-UD3 R5 Socket AM3+ ATX

Well, according to the Realtek control panel, it should work. The subwoofer does its thumpy thing when you send it test tones. But if you try to play a movie or, anything else really, it doesn't do anything.
