    Sound, video and game controllers
High definition Audio device = Digital sound output from MB.
NVIDIA virtual audio Device (Wave extensible) (WDM) = Digital sound output thru HDMI (sound enabled monitor or TV)
Realtek High Definition Audio = analog outputs and inputs on MB.

    Other devices.
Multimedia Audio Controller, which has warning sign, I don't know what it is. Try it's properties and note "Hardware Ids", if you google that, it should tell you what it might be.
Are you sure the High Definition Audio Device under Sound, video and game controllers is the Digital sound output? For me this has a Microsoft driver and was there before I installed the Realtek drivers. Shouldn't the Realtek drivers be controlling the digital outputs as well?

The Multimedia Audio Controller is a M-Audio soundcard that I have plugged in but aren't using or have installed drivers for because I don't have an amplifier/receiver to connect to it.

Why do we have the separate entries for Sound, video and game controllers and Audio inputs and outputs in Device manager?

Yeah, I'm sure it's digital output, at least that's how it's here although I turned it off.
Yes, Realtek drivers control digital output too, you can see it in Realtek HD audio manager in control panel but digital sound doesn't go thru CODEC chip. It isn't actually reproduced, just sends digital sound stream to receiving device, usually DAC, with or without amplifier.
Audio inputs and outputs in Device manager I have in "Devices and Printers" in the Control panel. I guess it's a legacy feature and bound to change some time in the future just like rest of Control panel. Just like dozens of other things that are in two (or more) places. Some panels and dialogs hail from XP or from before.

Inputs and Outputs are your things like Line In or Microphones etc AFAIK , my guess is M$ is controlling them on top of the Realtek stuff so they can feed ALL apps those outputs etc eg Skype or whatever.

the One Under Sound is the actual Realtek Card/Chip

The nvidia one shows up with all NVidia Cards for HDMI or DisplayPort output

Install the proper driver for the M-Audio may clear some things up as at the moment M$ is installing generic ones instead , win10 will try it's damnest if you don't but doesn't always succeed. Or just remove it...

I'd try 7926 out Mike, they are good drivers.

I've not had a chance to try out build 7933 yet as I'm still on holiday. Just thought it worthwhile to post a link to the latest for users who might like to give them a go :)

Would anyone mind telling me what the Realtek FTP servers are?

Just installed 7933 and works good, seems like sound is louder at same settings. One anomaly though, if I set listening to Line In in both, Sound in control panel and in Realtek HD panel I get that sound twice with slight delay on one of them.

I've got Realtek Digital outputs listed under Inputs and Outputs but apparently with Microsoft drivers. Doesn't make any sense, I would think that the Realtek should be driving everything.

I don't think MS have been able to find anything for the M-Audio card, even M-Audio doesn't have a Win 10 driver for this card, it's probably getting too old and unsupported.

Yes I like 7926 as well , seem louder and nicer sound. wasn't sure I wanted to upgrade actually......

Realtek FTP is Realtek's direct links to the Files they now have to give to Microsoft .

(FTP is just a very old internet file transfer protocol if you didn't know that all Browsers support.)
