It's not that strange really. Realtek advise users to download Realtek drivers from motherboard manufacturers sites. That's why I always use the Realtek ftp servers as they are always kept up to date.
However the ftp site has various directories where the drivers are stored.

Build 7889 by @rsdnn won't even install. I get "Install Realtek HD Audio Driver Failure !! [Error Code: -0001]". Is anyone else getting this? I had previously removed my Realtek and Intel HD drivers (since even the graphics installer installs an audio driver), then reinstalled Intel followed by 7889. I have an older build 7885 that installs correctly, but I'm still getting the issue I described in post #942 (lower than normal volumes, and audio only working sporadically and only in some applications). Linux is my main OS, I only use Windows to play games for the most part, but I would rather avoid a reinstall. I don't get audio issues in Fedora and my volume is extremely loud.

Edit: When audio isn't working in a particular application, I also don't hear anything when wearing headphones. Volume is always at 100% for Windows and applications.

Are you running a 64 bit system? Build 7889 posted is x64 only.

@DooGie: I haven't used a 32 bit Windows OS since I stopped using Vista a long time ago. But yes, I do have x64 and the install still failed.

Edit: OK, so I figured out why some of my DOS games don't have sound. I had to manually configure them in DOSBox/D-Fend Reloaded. Now audio works. But what I still can't figure out is why sound is only working intermittently in some other (Windows, not DOS) games.

It just goes to show how the Realtek HD drivers vary from system to system. I just installed build 7889 with no problems at all, intersting that the volume with these on my system is a fair bit louder than build 7885. Soundwise they are pretty good as all the most recent builds have been, there have been some vile sounding ones in the past.

It's probably worth mentioning that my install routine for Realtek HD drivers is a bit OTT. After uninstalling the previous drivers I reboot and run CCleaner's Registry Cleaner which for some reason needs to be run twice, after the first pass it will find 150 or 151 invalid registry entries which are related to Realtek HD entries so I delete these. Next I run the Registry Cleaner again where it finds another 189 invalid entries relating to Realtek which are also deleted. After that I install the new drivers running the install as administrator.
Yes as I said before it's well OTT but since I started doing it this way I've had no problems with the audio drivers.
