Thanks DooGie. Downloading 7796 from Realtek ftp site was good. But attempting to download 7796 from MS was...an epic fail!
An update on this: two new v6.0.1.7796 downloads have recently showed up (so there are now four of them) on MS Update Catalog - only the 7796 downloads that are 76.7Mb (for x86) and 92.4Mb (for x64) in size that actually work; the other two downloads (81.7Mb & 113.1Mb) are still broken & produce error messages when trying to download them. The two new 7796 downloads are for this Realtek HD audio device with the following hardware ID:

    hdaudio\func_01&ven_10ec&dev_0892&subsys_10438698

Subsys ID beginning with "1043" indicates the "Vendor ID" is ASUS; The "Company" name for the download description says "ASUSTeK Computer Inc."

    Update Add/Fix History:

    • Customizations.

    Tip   Tip

    • You will need to have cookies enabled, check the accept box, click Next, and click on the High Definition Audio Codecs (Software) link before it will take you to the actual Realtek HD audio driver download page.
    • You can download a ZIP version or the EXE version of the driver.
    • When the driver installation is complete, you will need to set your audio settings again in the Realtek HD Audio Manager in the Control Panel (Classic View).
    • Some OEM computers will have a custom version of the Realtek HD Audio Manager with the OEM manufacturer's name included instead. For example it may be named "Acer [Realtek] HD Audio Manager" instead for the OEM Acer.

My Acer laptop requires Reateh DH Audio driver.
This article will come in handy.
    Thank you.

Hum, removing and reinstalling Windows Media Player seems to have improved the sound quality for that device video playing and also some improvement in sounds elsewhere. Never could get the codecs to work properly.

There is still an equalizer in WMP and you can make good use of it.

Just seeing if anyone else has this issue. Trying to install 6.0.1.7801 and 6.0.1.7806 on several Windows 10 machines. The install occurs, but there is no speaker icon in the start up and there is no program in the control panel.

If I use 6.0.1.7796 those two things are there. Also I tried downloading the 64-bit from the Microsoft website and I keep getting an error. The 32-bit one however works.

Thank you for the quick response CountMike. Yes, sound comes through. I was just wondering if anyone else has seen this as this is the first time for me and weird on different systems. But yes, sound is there and the driver information is correct.

Only reason I bring this up is that some of the systems are gaming systems which have 5.1 speakers. There are some older games that the only way to hear some of the talking in the game is by switching over to stereo and this was done by accessing the Realtek program by clicking the speaker icon in the startup.

Or maybe there is something I can do to resurrect that speaker icon? I have tried going in to the tray and setting it to "always", but it still does not show. 6.0.1.7796 works so no big deal, but just wondered.

    Thanks again

Brink made this a while ago: Volume Control - Old or New in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums
and this that's opposite: Volume Control - Old or New in Windows 10 - Windows 10 Forums
It just might bring speaker icon back.

Her are the two icons missing. The one in the control panel and the one in the startup. Usually the gamers double click the one in the tray and then change the speaker configuration from 5.1 to stereo and then launch their old games.

But the two pictures of the speaker and the program in the control panel if I install 6.0.1.7801 or 6.0.1.7806 they are not there to access.

    In control panel

    In tray
