@Showbiz, after looking through the Speccy report and your other screenshots I would confirm what NovHak posted here Latest Realtek HD Audio Driver Version - Page 162 - Windows 10 Forums.

The Realtek HD drivers are not compatible with your soundchip as yours is an HW chip and requires the HW codecs which you already have installed.
See your screenshot from earlier in this thread Latest Realtek HD Audio Driver Version - Page 161 - Windows 10 Forums
Agree. That's what I suspected when I figured out he was running a Dell XPS 13. Latest Realtek HD Audio Driver Version - Page 161 - Windows 10 Forums

But Realtek are also HW chips called CODEC (Coder DECoder) and that's not same as SW codecs.

Haven't had one for a while but I think that VIA chipsets have it in the south bridge.

I'm kind of perplexed to why my pc doesn't have any updates to realtek. I check from time to time, nothing.

According to Specy, it doesn't have Realtek sound at all but:
    Audio
    Sound Card
Intel Smart Sound Technology (Intel SST)

    Playback Device
Speakers (Intel Smart Sound Technology (Intel SST))

    Recording Device
Microphone (Intel Smart Sound Technology (Intel SST))

And that would require this driver: intel smart sound technology driver Windows 10 drivers download - Windows 10 intel smart sound technology driver driver - Windows 10 Download

Mike, I would agree apart from one thing. Have a look at Showbiz's screenshot here Latest Realtek HD Audio Driver Version - Page 161 - Windows 10 Forums

The hardware Ids relate to Realtek Audio.

Some drivers refuse to install if they don't recognize P&P hardware, this one apparently not. When normally installed (from setup.exe,) Realtek drivers first uninstall old ones and only after reboot install new, no need to uninstall them from anywhere. Another thing or test if you will, is that once you uninstall drivers for any P&P HW, windows would at least attempt to install some drivers.

It does, and re-installs drivers with a Realtek label attached.

I'm really confused now. What should I do? Am I up to date or should I try and completely uninstall these things again, let Windows detect and install drivers, then look to see if there's actually a later version I should be able to update to?

Appreciate all the help by the way guys.

Well, I don't know any more, Specy usually shows all sound devices, here's my for instance:
    Audio
    Sound Cards
Realtek High Definition Audio (This is Realtek codec chip analog)
AMD High Definition Audio Device (This is for HDMI sound from GPU)
WsAudio_Device Audio (This one is my USB capture adapter)
    Playback Devices
Realtek Digital Output(Optical) (Realtek High Definition Audio)
Speakers (Realtek High Definition Audio) (default)
Realtek Digital Output (Realtek High Definition Audio)
    Recording Devices
Line In (Realtek High Definition Audio)
    Line (WsAudio_Device) (Capture card again)
Microphone (Realtek High Definition Audio) (default)

Maybe you can try also program "Everest" for more details:
