Well your screenshot of the Speccy Audio screen is showing that your PC has an AMD High Definition Audio Device so I'd assume that Windows is recognising it.
Have you had a look in Device Manager to make sure it's showing there, to me it looks like the problem might be finding the right driver for it.

System already has the latest driver installed

I have checked the drivers and danced a jig
and stood on my head and who knows what
all else and, when I check "playback devices"
    it always reads the same

AMD HDMI Output - High Definition Audio
Device - NOT PLUGGED IN... (that does not
change when I unplug my speakers)

However, nothing has been touched or changed
since before the update and the speakers worked
    before the update...

Unless my kitties have been doing more than playing
on my keyboard when I'm not around, I don't know
    what else to do.

    thank you many bunches

    LOL.

Here's a suggestion: open Device Manager and drill down to Sound, video and game controllers.
Right click the AMD HD entry and pick Uninstall.
Make sure to tick the box that asks you to remove the drivers too.
Proceed and when done restart the device.

When logged in again you may now see a yellow bang in device manager. Right click that too and opt for "Let Windows search for the best drivers etc."
If it fails find a driver go to the website link I posted earlier and let AMD search for the best driver for your device.

    Best of luck,

I'll provide the correct troubleshooting steps for you, but I don't have the time to explain HOW to do them. Sorry.

    Troubleshooting Steps in this order:

    1. Make sure speakers are plugged into the correct audio port on your pc (usually green). Try both front and back ports, if you have them.
    2. Make sure speakers are powered on and turned up.
    3. Test speakers on another computer to make sure they work
    4. Make sure you have the correct Playback device selected in Windows and the volume is up. Make sure your check disabled devices and enable them if necessary (right click in Sound, Playback and select show disabled devices).
    5. Check Device manager and make sure audio device is showing operational and not disabled or offline
    6. Run the Microsoft Fix-It Utility called "Find and fix problems playing sounds" here: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/2970908
    7. Uninstall the audio device drivers and reinstall them, here are steps for that:
Click on Start and type Device Manager and click on Device Manager. Go to "Sound, Video and Game Controllers" and expand it. In device manager, Right Click on your High Definition Audio Device and select "Uninstall" and be sure to select "delete the driver software for this device." Reboot. After reboot, Windows 10 will reinstall drivers for you. If the drivers don't reinstall, you can use the AMD drivers mentioned in a previous post.

IF the above steps were properly followed and you still have issues, the most likely cause is a defective audio circuit on your motherboard. The second most likely cause is a windows misconfiguration. A competent tech can troubleshoot your problem by either remoting into your computer or coming to your home. Good Luck.

If you can't resolve your issue, there are external "USB sound Adapters" on Amazon for under $10 that work well and sound pretty good assuming you're not an audiophile.

Intrepid1., the headset is USB. I used to have the same model, so they contain their own soundchip.

You know how I know that my kitties play on my
computer when I'm not around? Yesterday, I blew
enough cat hair and cookies out of my keyboard to
knit at least one new kitty. and I don't eat cookies.

Delete AMD and drivers... rebooted... Drivers reinstalled
themselves... still nothing... used the check AMD thingy
and they read "correct drivers installed"

i plugged the speakers into another Pc and they work
    perfectly.

I'm thinking that one of the kitties may have been
playing with the interior and messed something up.

Will have to get a technician to take a look ;(

you guys have all been fabulous... I so appreciate you

will let you know what I find out

    Hi Intrepid...

thank you many bunches for the step by step list

yes, the headset is USB (WONDERFUL HEADSET)
speakers on and powered... tried on other computer
    and they work properly.

did the unistall/reinstall and used the microsoft
check and it couldn't find the problem

i went through the whole check list and still no
sound. Strange though.. when I pushed the button
to turn the speakers on, there was a loud "pop"
(it always happens when I turn them on - sound
    through the speakers)

there was a buzz and hmmmmm when I was
    plugging the speaker cord in.

Everything worked perfectly until the windows 10
    update.

so, i guess i will have to have a tech open it up and
see if anything has come loose.

thank you so many bunches for your help

    Karen
