Well I don't know how that works! I downloaded the drivers from Realtek's website and it somehow recognizes I have an Asus MB and installs the corresponding CP, kinda spooky!
Not so spooky, Realtek implements into the chips a DeviceID, which has to match with corresponding inf-file.
And this inf-file determines which features, branding are installed.
For example: My Lenovo Notebook has the following ID's
    VEN_10EC&DEV_0283&SUBSYS_17AA4026
10EC = Realtek, 0283 = assigned for Lenovo and has the Dolby suport, so if the driver package comes with the Dolby Installer, it will be installed in the control panel
My HP notebook has the following ID's
VEN_10EC&DEV_0290&SUBSYS_103C8092. DEV 0290 enables the B&O Play Soundmanager.

    Cheers

Should we uninstall all of the Microsoft sound drivers after installing the Realtek ones? I still have a High Definition Audio Device in Device manager that has a Microsoft driver.

Also the three listings under Audio inputs and outputs claim to have Microsoft drivers not Realtek and there is a box that says "No driver files are required or have been loaded for this device."

Are my digital outputs working? Why do they have Microsoft drivers despite installing Realtek drivers?

Just run the setup program from Realtek, it will uninstall old drivers, reboot the system and install their own.

I've already installed the Realtek drivers but it looks like it didn't remove any of the MS ones... Also not sure why the digital outputs aren't showing as having Realtek drivers.

All but that Realtek drivers are for Digital sound output.
Nvidia Virtual audio.... is driver for sound thru HDMI connection. It has no bearing on Realtek audio CODEC chip. Keep those or they will be re-installed with GPU drivers.

I'm not sure what you mean about the Realtek drivers and the digital sound output. To me it looks like the digital outputs still have Microsoft drivers installed, actually everything under Audio inputs and outputs are still MS drivers?

What is the difference between Audio inputs and outputs and Sound, video and game controllers in Device Manager anyway?

    Sound, video and game controllers
High definition Audio device = Digital sound output from MB.
NVIDIA virtual audio Device (Wave extensible) (WDM) = Digital sound output thru HDMI (sound enabled monitor or TV)
Realtek High Definition Audio = analog outputs and inputs on MB.

    Other devices.
Multimedia Audio Controller, which has warning sign, I don't know what it is. Try it's properties and note "Hardware Ids", if you google that, it should tell you what it might be.

    Last Updated: August 31st 2016DRIVER VERSION: 6.0.1.7926
    (32-bit and 64-bit Windows)
    Download at: Microsoft Update Catalog
I can't download 64 bit version (I guess, that would be the first two links in the provided Microsoft Update Catalog website - the file size is larger), IE always shows error 8DDD0010. Also when I add the driver to the download basket, the basket cannot be opened any more. I downloaded X86 drivers but of course Windows does not see them as valid driver update source. Also, the package doesn't contain any setup.exe utilities, so I cannot be sure if all the files would be installed correctly, including control panel etc.

I tried usual update from Device Manager but Windows says that I already have the latest drivers, which is not true because the date is much older than August 31st 2016 and also Realtek Control Panel does not work with those default Microsoft drivers.

Not sure, what would be the right way to get the latest drivers and also keep Realtek HD control panel utility. Why WIndows Update does not offer these 31th August drivers automatically?

I'm trying to perform the update because my PC experiences audio microfreezes once in an hour or so since I migrated to Windows 10 and there are no other sources of issue - no error events, no high CPU or disk activity etc. My only hope is updated drivers.

My Wife and I have been married for 44 years but I did have to think twice before bringing the laptop. It's just about pushing the boundary.
