    replace hard drive with SSD

I have a laptop with a 1 TB hard drive. I am only using about 300 GB. Can I replace my 1 TB hard drive with a 500 GB SSD?

    Yes.

I did basically the same thing, a few months ago. I used the Magician cloning software for the Samsung SSD, but there are other ways of doing it.

Magician is Samsung's tool. If you have any other drive, you can use Macrium (it is free) or Minitool Partition wizard.

Both tools are excellent. Get one of external cases, put SSD in, clone or image existing drive, replace HDD with SSD and go. I prefer Minitool for this.

    Magician is fine too.

What was left out is "if" your laptop allows it. It should (most likely would), but you should double check before purchasing the drive.

    Good luck.

Also check if the laptop has a second drive bay. You may need to purchase a tray and/or adapter cable if you want to install the HDD in the second drive bay for storage. Or if you have an optical disk drive like a DVD drive installed that you don't use, you can also buy adapters to install the HDD in that space permanently (but you lose the DVD drive).

Or, if you don't want to or can't install the HDD as a permanent storage drive, you can put it in a USB enclosure as @AndreTen stated. If you want to install the HDD in an adapter in the space where the DVD drive is, you can also buy a USB enclosure to turn the removed DVD drive into an external drive. Laptop DVD drives come in two heights, though - make sure you are getting the adapters of the correct height.

If you wind up needing/wanting an external USB enclosure to make your old drive into a nice USB storage drive (IE: your laptop has no extra drive bay), or as a method of getting one drive cloned to the other, etc. I bought This One about a year or more ago and it has been great. Cheap, good SATA3 to USB3 controller, and works perfectly. I have even installed Linux on it before and booted from it. These enclosures are very useful little tools.
