Unknown USB Device in Empty Port

Following a clean install of Windows Version 20H2 (Build 19042.867), I received an error message that Windows did not recognize the last USB device connected. Within Device Manager, the device status was reported as: "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43) A request for the USB device descriptor failed."

I googled the device instance path (USB\VID_0000&PID_0002\5&284537dc&0&11) and found some German site that said it is a card reader. Indeed, using USBview I saw it was connected to Port 11, Hub 3 which is where the card reader was connected. After disconnecting the card reader from the motherboard, I removed the motherboard battery for a few minutes, put it back in and restarted the computer with the card reader still disconnected. The issue persisted.

Other fixes I've tried: updating chipset, usb drivers and BIOS, uninstalling all USB device host controllers in Device Manager and restarting. I've also disconnected all external USB devices and another USB hub that is part of the case.

I'm guessing there was some issue with the card reader not being recognized that has persisted even after it is disconnected. Is there any way to clear this? Thank you

zbook - Thanks for posting those links. I will try to make the time to read those 2 & my 2 together to see if my version can be improved.

    Thank you.

    For your link consider:
    a) click view > click show hidden devices > manually expanding all rows > then look for yellow triangles or unknown devices
    b) many end users don't know how to enter data into the Microsoft catalog > consider instructions about what to include and not include when using copy and paste of the hardware id.

zbook and Try3, thank you for the suggestions and links. They are all great resources. My issue may be a little different than the ones for which they are written. Let me try to give additional details..

First keep in mind that no hardware is currently connected to this USB hub. I've done several reboots including resetting the motherboard configuration since disconnecting the device (a card reader). I've given up on finding the driver for this card reader. It is made by Linkskey, which does not come up in any of the driver lookup sites and appears to be out of business. I don't mind if I cannot use the card reader again. The issue of an "unknown device" still pops up and I think it is causing my long boot times too.

Currently, with no hardware connected, the "device" info is as follows:

    Hardware ID: USB\DEVICE_DESCRIPTOR_FAILURE
    Device instance path: USB\VID_0000&PID_0002\5&284537DC&0&11

I did try searching the Microsoft Catalog and other sites as suggested using all and parts of the device path with no luck.

Note that the Vendor ID is "0000". This does not seem to be valid. I looked it up to be sure on usb.org https://www.usb.org/sites/default/fi...ds121720_3.pdf and confirmed it is not a valid Vendor ID.

I'm thinking this could be a software issue? Might this instance need to be cleared in the registry? I honestly have no idea if that makes any sense or how to do it. Thank you for your patience with someone who has little knowledge on this. Regards, Matt

If you're 100% sure you installed all required drivers and you installed them only from OEM site and did not use any driver downloaders...

    ID: USB\DEVICE_DESCRIPTOR_FAILURE
Means that the driver failed to describe USB (unrelated to device connected to USB port), device description is used by OS to construct Hardware ID (which likely explains why you don't see the ID)

The most recent chipset driver for your motherboard X99A SLI PLUS is from 2016

This is good indicator this driver may no longer function properly for most recent Windows version usually because of changes introduced in new Windows.

Did you try installing chipset driver from "optional drivers" found in Windows update?

I have installed the following drivers so far:
Three from MSI's website (the chipset you mentioned, ASMedia USB 3.0/3.1, and Realtek HD audio)
One from Windows optional updates for a usb-bluetooth adapter issue I was having (no more issues there).

As far as the additional "optional drivers" in Windows update. There are roughly 75 available. All begin with Intel. There are three that just say "Intel - System". Is this what I need? The most recent is from 2017.

    Thanks

There is another thread with a similar problem.

These are some planned troubleshooting steps:

Reinstall USB Root Hub driver in Device Manager
Reinstall USB Host Controller driver in Device Manager

Was that a mistype or is Windows update really showing you a list of 75 drivers that need to be installed?

I think yours is a self-build, you can go to the maker's support site for each of your hardware elements [including the MB maker for any Bios update].
Or you can just accept the convenience of Windows update offering them all in one 'place' and get it to install all of them.
