Gotta say - it's been quite some time now and it has still not been fixed. I am regularly checking my DELL updates for a fix from Realtek as well, but nothing. It's also still not the end of the world, but annoying nevertheless. Let's hope there'll be a fix soon...
Ok, so I guess everyone's already moved over to other threads, but just in case, let it be known that reverting to an older version of the Realtek audio driver (from April 2015) worked for me as well (while manually asking Windows in the device manager to update the driver, even though there was one, did not solve the problem). I'd rather use current drivers optimized for Windows 10, but until Realtek fixes the issue, this is an acceptable interim solution.
Same problem here on both of my Asus laptop; the old one still running on windows 8.1 while my new one (an Asus ROG laptop) is running on windows 10. This is ultra annoying and frustrating. I've been trying a couple of things like reinstalling drivers (RealTek) and such... nothing worked. I have a hard time believing there isn't a fix by now...
I'm having the exact same problem since a couple of weeks now.
Play media, pause it, wait a bit, resume, volume is way higher than it should but the number is the same. Quickly adjust it back and forth and it fixes it
What I've tried:
-Downgraded and updated my realtek drivers. => no effect
-Disabled and enabled windows audio enhancement => no effect
-Disabled skype audio lowering => no effect
-Disabled and enabled exclusive mode(windows audio settings) => no effect
During all of these test I've rebooted my PC everytime.
None of the above fixes the problem.
This only happens with youtube for me.
As soon as I hit the volume slider , the volume lowers.
As soon as I pause and resume, the volume goes way louder then before until I hit the volume slider again.
And it's also not browser specific btw, I'm also having this problem when using Windows Edge.
I'm not having this issue with Netflix or Windows Media Player or Soundcloud or Google Music player.
My situation is similar to Odo's. I've tried just about everything listed in Odo's post and the problem persists. I hope Realtek fixes this issue soon!
Dell recently added an updated version of the Realtek driver (6.0.1.7564) to their product support page, but it does not fix the problem for me. I tested it out on a YouTube video by pausing the video for a few seconds and then playing it again. Let's just say I nearly blew my eardrums out!
I should say that this all started when I did a clean install of Windows 10. When I first upgraded to Windows 10 from 8.1, I never had a problem. Could the clean install have screwed something up?
I upgraded to Windows 10 from 8.1 in August if I remember correctly
and I am experiencing this issue about a couple of weeks ago.
It surely wasn't present right after the upgrade.
Thats why I'm pretty sure this might be a Youtube problem and not so much a driver or OS problem.
I've started a thread on the Google Productforums, perhaps they may pinpoint the issue.

I was having this problem too, until yesterday. (However, I have to mention that I'm running Windows 8.1) I made the update to the latest audio driver from Realtek (from their official site - version 2.79 with driver version 6.0.1.7541) which solved the bug. I agree with the user above me because I noticed that, after the driver update, videos get just a little louder when you leave the Youtube video volume at maximum and get back to normal if change the volume.
To get a better understanding of what I am saying, try any Youtube video and set the volume at max in the player (not from the Windows Mixer), choose another Youtube video, listen a bit and then, lower the volume and get it right back at max - you will notice a difference in volume between the intial maximum and the new one. (Again, do not change the global volume! Just the Youtube player.)
Also, I tried this on Internet Explorer 11 and I can confirm that it is the same, so I too believe that it is now a Youtube problem. (It wasn't before, in my case, because the volume change was much more noticeable and was also present in other applications.)
I’ve been having the exact same problems with volume spikes and have been trying to solve it for months ... So I’m very glad to see that it’s a known issue, not something unique to my machine. I have a Dell XPS 27 running Windows 8.1 and have signed up for Windows 10 but not yet installed it. I notice the volume spikes both on iTunes music and streaming videos. Symptoms are the same as others: if I pause a song or video, hitting “play” again seems to double the actual volume, even though my audio volume slider remains at its original setting. It is instantly fixed by manually dragging the volume slider in either direction.
I’ve tried disabling the Dell MAXX AudioPro speaker enhancement in Control Panel, updating the RealTek audio driver, synchronizing all the volume mixer sliders to the same level … nothing works.

When I try to update my driver, I get the message, “You have the latest available driver.”
If reverting to an earlier driver version can solve this, how can I trick Windows into letting me install an earlier version? I tried doing it through Dell’s driver updates, and although it allowed me to download an earlier version, it would not allow me to install it. It told me something like, “Installation failed. A newer version of the driver is already installed.”
