DVD not recognized with blank disk and no burn available

    Windows 10 Home (X64) Version 1703 (build 150615.332)HP Pavilion Desktop PC 570-pOXX

I wanted to burn an ISO to dvd and clicked Burn on the context menu. The above message came up. Checked Device Manager and there was no indication of the dvd. On a chance I mounted a music cd. It was recognized and the music is now playing. It also appeared in Device Manager. So I know the drive and driver are ok.

Is it possible that the drive can't be written to? It is hp PLDS DVDRW DU8AESH.

Apparently there is no burning software present in Win 10. I tried Burn Aware with no luck.

If need be I will replace the drive but that's pretty drastic for an almost brand-new pc.

The DVDRW part indicates it can use both R and RW discs. But a Search on duckduckgo.com shows the first result as LDS [Mormon] video discs. Further checking shows the first letter of the model could be a P as in PLDS DVDRW DU8AESH. This page suggests it's only a CD-ROM:
    http://www.binarydb.com/driver/hp-PL...SH-276315.html
This Dell page suggests a multi-format drive:
Driver for PLDS DVD+-RW DH-16ABS - Disk Drives (HDD, CD/DVD, Blu-ray) Forum - Disk Drives - Dell Community

Many times hardware issues with an ODD/Optical Disc Drive will cause only the CD-ROM [Read Only Memory] to work.

For free burning might try CDBurnerXP.

Wow, Berton, you are on the ball! Thanks for your response.

Good news: I changed settings/auto play/removable drive to Open Folder. Then popped in a disk and it recognized it! Don't know if its a causal relationship. The Windows burner worked and I burned my ISO. Maybe expecting it to boot was overreach; It didn't. But that's another question.

Edit: Downloaded CDBurnerXP. Will see if that will help

You're welcome. For burning, especially .iso files, I keep Roxio Easy CD and DVD Burning installed, about $30USD at Wal*Mart. I'm going to put CDBurnerXP on an HP 620 Notebook and a Dell Vostro 1510, both rehabs and just waiting for a keyboard for the HP so I don't have to use an external keyboard [don't know how the client's granddaughter managed to pop all the F row caps plus a couple others off, must have been bored or mad].

There's an unwritten rule, buy something and a few days, weeks or months later it usually will be cheaper somewhere. May have to get a couple.
