One of the USB ports of my desktop PC only recognizes storage devices

Title says it all. My desktop PC (Asus Z170i motherboard) has two USB ports in the front panel and several in the back. One of the front USB ports stopped functioning all of a sudden for certain devices. My USB headphones, Android phone, and Logitech Wireless Mouse are no longer recognized by this particular port. However, USB flash disk and WD backup disk are recognized just fine. All other USB ports function perfectly. Running Windows 10 64-bit build 1703. Re-installing the USB drivers from Asus website did not help. When I insert the device, Device Manager shows no indication whatsoever. Double checked the wiring inside the box. Everything looks all right. Thanks in advance!

Could it be the devices that are not functioning require removal via the "Safely Remove Hardware" function (Icon in the notification area)? These types of devices can get a Windows corruption status and thus will not work. To fix these devices, connect one of the, go to the Device Manager, USB section and there will probably be an Unknown device listed. That usually is the device. Uninstall the device, in the Device Manager. Then disconnect the device and reboot the PC. After Windows starts, connect it and Windows will detect and reinstall the device. Then, in the future when you want to disconnect it use the Safely Remove Hardware function.

After the "uninstall" procedure you may have to reinstall hardware specific drivers, if the device is NOT plug and play. If its a plug and play device, Windows will supply (install) the needed driver.

Thank you for the reply. But like I said in the OP, when I connect the device (e.g. USB flash drive), there is no new item shown in the Device Manager. Not even an Unknown Device.

Usually, what I posted is what the problem is. I too have an ASUS Z170 motherboard (ROG Maximus VII Hero).

Expand the Device Manager to show hidden devices, that may show something.
Its a "corruption" in Windows status for those devices.

Thank you for trying to help. But apparently there is something else is going on in my case. Steps above did not address the issue.

Reinstall the Intel motherboard chipset drivers and see if that helps.

Also, is this a USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 port?

USB 3.0 port. On the front panel.

    I reinstalled the following http://dlcdnet.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mis...r_11601032.zip

But I don't see any difference with the way USB behaves.

Go to Device Manager and look at the properties for your USB Devices.

Go through all the tabs... see if anything looks strange. Look at the Events tab too, anything recent in there that looks different?

Can't tell if anything looks out of ordinary. See snapshots below.
