    Hey tcebob,
    In Device Manager expand (little arrow) by the DVD/CD-ROM Drives you should see the manufactures name/model of your dvd/cd. Like this ... mine is a Matshita.

    Note: The Microsoft Virtual DVD-ROM is used when you mount an ISO.

    Go to Device Manager and expand the DVD-ROM entry.

    This should tell us who built the DVD drive:

    $12 sounds cheap for such a device. I'll try it if it's installable. If it's usb I'll have to consider the amount of geegaws I already have on my desk. Back later. . .

    Hey tcebob,
    As previous mentioned your make/model the dvd should be a writer. It could be that windows is just not seeing it.
    In Device Manager Under DVD/CD-ROM Drives ... does it show only the Microsoft Virtual DVD-ROM ?
    In File Explorer > This PC ... does it actually show your DVD/CD Drive

    In the Ebay link provided in post #13, the first entry is an Internal SATA DVD/RW. for $12.49 including Free Shipping. It is relatively easily installed. Here is a youtube video explaining how to replace your optical drive.

    Yes, it shows (J:\DVD RW Drive. Didn't notice that before.

    Device Manager DVD/CD-ROM drives shows hp PLDS DVDRW DU8AESH. So it's supposed to be RW.

    How to make Windows see it?

    How to make Windows see it?

    Go back to the Device Manager and expand the DVD/CD ROM entry to show the HP writer.

    Now, double click on that entry "HP writer". A small window will open.
    On the top of that window, click on the Driver tab.
    In the middle of this tab, you will see {on the left hand side} "Update Driver".
    Click on it.
    Another small window will open with two options. One to have Windows search for a new driver {if available, it will install it}}
    or to search PC and install driver from your folder {if you already have a driver stored in a folder}

    Click on the first option to see if Windows can install a new driver.

    If it can't find one, go to the HP site and search for your PC. Look up the Support page where, you should find all
    drivers for your PC's hardware. Download the driver for the DVD writer and install it.

    If this still doesn't work, it might be a setting in the Registry that would have to change.

    Flashorn.

    Behold, a miracle. I tried again to burn an ISO and it worked! So I conclude there was something wrong with a driver and it updated. It's not the speediest process but hey.
