I installed and ran the Intel Driver Update Utility, it came back with a chipset driver update, I installed the update but that didn't fix it

So basically I still have this issue, I recently bought a Logitech G430 headset with mic, it has a built in sound driver with USB so I thought that would make a difference, it is a slight difference over my previous pair of USB headphones, but still not working fully. This is what it looks like in the settings, I have no way of setting it to be a default device, I am thinking this is pointing to outdated chipset drivers or something to do with the core windows drivers, it also doesn't have the levels on the right hand side.

As I stated early on in this thread, there is a very good possibility the OS is corrupted and in that case only a complete reinstall will fix it. Drastic, but sometimes needed.

Just in case you haven't tried yet go to Sound in control panel highlight your USB headphone device in Playback click on Properties go to the Levels tab and make sure it's set to 100% something that's easy to overlook. You can rename the device in the General tab from Speaker to whatever

Hey all, I decided to take fireberd's advice and have just done a complete OS reinstall. That seems to have solved the problem perfectly.

Thankyou everyone for your help and time!!!! It is good to see people on the internet still attempt to help one another, and maybe the information in this thread can help others sort out their problems where it may not have helped me.
