Stupid mouse keeps doubling my single-clicks

Mice work by using your button presses to compress small crystals that, in turn, generate electrical impulses that are then transmitted to the computer by, in your case, wires.

Poorly engineered crystals can rapidly start to behave erratically in a way that the computer can interpret as two pulses [their waveforms are never pure in any case, there is always a reverberation and the waveform tops are never really flat].

Poorly engineered or squashed mice cables can distort the pulses as they are passed to the computer so that the computer can interpret the end result as two pulses even if the signal was decent enough originally.

Pulses can be so close to the threshold of misinterpretation that ambient temperature or time since last use or ... can put them over the edge or allow them to just scrape through. That's why diagnosis proves so difficult.

You might find that you can fiddle with it for ages & not get anywhere or you might find that replacing the mouse & putting the old one away in a shoebox for six months results in it working again.

I used to take them apart and fiddle worthlessly but no longer bother. I now replace them when the problem starts.

Non of my mice have small crystals in the buttons. It's a metal contact that touches another metal contact, with a spring (or spring tension) to move things back to neutral when you release it. Where did you get this "crystals" info from? What often happens is the spring tension is lost and the contacts touch when they aren't supposed to. Or don't touch at all. Switch bounce can also cause a multi signal but that's usually filtered out by the electronics inside.

Omron Basic Switches | OMRON Electronic Components Web makes some of finest micro switches and many mouse makers use them. Now when Alpha reminded me, it's possible that small tab on mouse button that presses against micro switch is worn out and doesn't depress it enough to keep from changing state. Another problem I found few times is dust or dirt under the button that stops it from depressing switch sufficiently and causing same problem.

Most people fixate on it being a button issue because, that's usually what fails. Software issues, like this, IMHO, are few and far between. It can be a real pain when it is software though. Especially since Windows 10 can be very determined to reinstall the driver it thinks is the right one.

Funny the tricks memory plays. I honestly recalled the use of piezo-electric crystals rather than micro-switches in mice but I have just checked half a dozen and they are all micro-switches. I can't think what else I might have been regularly taking apart that might have led to my mistake.

Some push button barbeque starters have piezo-electric crystals in them. I wouldn't want to send that pulse into my PC though.

So do most of cigarette lighters, voltage is high enough to give you a good jolt, not very nice for low power computer components. But, that's only when you hit them hard. Piezo elements are also used for weigh scales because they also change their resistance when even lightly squashed and react to very small pressures. Other uses are for microphones and gramophone heads. When electrified they also vibrate and can be used for low power speakers and buzzers. Actually, quite useful crystals.

I believe you! Now when I really start to think about this, I sometimes have a bit of issues with right button clicks on 2 computers, 2 different mice and even experience the same issue on both touch pads. Especially in Edge browser. How likely would it be that all 4 hardware are broken?
