    I would still recommend the Macrium image first. Just to be safe.

    I backed everything up and attempted the reset PC about a week ago. I got an error saying that it couldn't be done and no changes have been made. I also tried reset PC without keeping files (wipe everything) but that failed as well. System restore does not work, going back to a previous windows build does not work. What is the next step?

    Sounds like a complete reinstall is the best option.

    I upgraded to windows 10 for free from windows 7 but I had windows 7 pre installed when I bought this computer so I don't have any product key. Am I able to do a clean reinstall without spending any money?

    Yes, if you used a Microsoft account to register your activated copy of Windows 10, it should (re)activate automatically when you log into that account on the repaired PC. Here's what the activation screen looks like if this is your PC and it's been activated as described:
