Here's an idea to verify if your hard ware needs to be replaced or not:

Download Ubuntu (an alternate operating system) and save it onto a USB device. Start up your computer from the USB device (you don't need to install anything; the computer will use the USB device as the main device to boot up from). After the Ubuntu operating system loads up, try playing some audio from within this operating system (the audio drivers should automatically be detected within that operating system). If the audio works perfectly in there, then it's some sort of driver issue within Windows that makes the audio not working. If there's no audio, then your hardware is likely to be broken and needs replacement.

But first, this just popped in my mind: See if you can download from the ASUS website the driver for audio for the computer model. After that, see if you can install the driver using this method:
Driver - Install in Device Manager in Windows 8

I've been having the exact same issue as TasusO (same model of Asus laptop ect.), pretty sure its a hardware issue because when it does decide to work if it gets moved or bumped itll cut out. Also when it decides to work theres occasionally crackling before it cuts out completely -mostly though it just cuts, without the crackling.
Same here seems to be a common issue with asus L555lj

    Hello everyone,
My laptop is Asus X555LJ with the i3-5010U and 4GB of DDR3.

Now my problem goes like this: last week I shut down my laptop like I regularly do and the next morning it didn't have any sound, hovering over the sound icon in taskbar shows "No Audio Output Device is installed.". I uninstalled and then reinstalled the audio driver from asus, no joy, then from realtek website still no joy. I did a windows reset keeping only the files and I reinstalled all drivers and the sound worked for 3-5 minutes, then again, it didn't work. I just did a fresh install of windows 10 and let it install the drivers automatically and still no sound.
There is nothing shown in Device Manager at Sound...., it isn't even on the list.

I think this may be a hardware issue? Does anyone know what do I have to replace in order to have the sound back?

    Thanks in advance.
    Hello
Is the problem solved? Can you please explain the measures you had taken to solve the issue?

Asus X554L here... I have had the same problem, 99% sure it is a hardware issue on the main PCB.

On top of the sound issue I had an issue with my IO board (USB port, SD card reader, Audio Jack), so I bought a new one. The problem was not fixed, so I replaced the HDD board to which it directly connects. Even after these replacements I still get the audio issue, ...and my IO issues still persist!

I have also tried the dual boot test with Ubuntu to no avail :/

If anyone has a solution I would be so grateful!

Been there, done that same result. Pretty sure the problem lies with the hdd board which has the sound chip. That 'snaps' on to the motherboard. Some how that snap connector has gone bad. Even screwed it down with an additional screw to no avail.

Only solution is a)usb audio plug or b) hook up to a monitor via hdmi as the hdmi connection has sound.

I fixed this issue with an older asus laptop and it maybe the same problem across the board. I tried to load a fresh windows 10 on an older laptop, and came up with no audio devices, no sound controller and the x mark on sound. Tried everything, nothing worked. Eventually found one thread on another forum which gave the solution. Before starting the new installation, go into boot menu and select legacy rather than UEFI, then run installation again. Sure, with the older laptops your system will be using MBR tables rather than UEFI, but it works. I haven't tried to convert back to GPT as it's not my laptop and can't be bothered trying. But this solution works and everything came back including audio...
