    Volume Mute Light won┤t change color

    I have an HP ProBook 6440b with a Win 10 Pro os. My problem is the volume mute light (#5 in the service manual, page 2-6). The switch works o.k. and shows when the mute function is on or off on the desktop but the light stays orange (muted position) regardless of the function being on or off. I know that the blue color is there as I see it flicker so slightly during upbooting but I can┤t find out how to have the blue color show when the speakers are not muted. The wireless button (#4; page 2-6) changes color and the function works properly when pushed (tried it as a function comparison test) so I think this may be a slight software glitch in the sound system code but how to find and fix is way beyond my knowledge and skills. If anyone knows how to fix this problem, please do tell but baby steps please as my computer skills are truly limited (old dog, new trick syndrome rules here).

    Open device manager and expand both:
    audio inputs and outputs
    sound video and game controllers

    See if this fixes the mute light problem:

    Open HP.com > software and drivers > HP Software and Driver Downloads for HP Printers, Laptops, Desktops and More | HP® Customer Support

    Launch HP support assistant to view your computers product or serial number and enter it on the HP software and drivers web site.
    Choose the appropriate operating sytem.
    Look at all of the drivers for your computer's configuration and operating system.
    If you find IDT High definition audio CODEC please install it.
    If you do not see if for windows 10 also look for it for windows 8.1 or 7.
    Once it is installed reboot and see if the orange light becomes white.

    Tried to install SP48147,getting error notices and relooping of the installation process which leads nowhere.

    Do you see the driver already installed in device manager?
    If so, uninstall it.
    Then open file explorer
    View the folder: SWSETUP
    See if the file is already in this folder.
    If so reopen this file and reinstall the CODEC

    Before I follow your suggestions, a quick update: as the updating didn┤t seem to work I stopped trying and just left it alone for awhile. About a half hour later I looked over and saw that the mute light was now blue. I tried the button but it and the volume buttons did not work at all. On the screen I was told that I needed to reboot, which I did and now the system has returned back to the way it was before: everything works except that the mute light does not change to blue as it should when the speakers are not muted. WTF?

    Have you run the HP UEFI diagnostics in the bios?

    Download the latest UEFI diagnostics.

    HP PC Hardware Diagnostics | HP® Official Site

    Power on with the F10 key or the F2 key. Navigate to the UEFI diagnostics and run either extensive or loop until failure tests on your PC overnight.

    Assuming everything passes go to the component tests and run the audio test which is interactive.

    Report back if there are any failure codes and the result of the audio component test.

    Ran the tests and all came up o.k.. Looked for but couldn┤t find any function test for the lights above the keyboard. During the whole test sequence the mute light was green-blue, like the volume up and down lights but when I then rebooted the light went orange again and stayed so even though pressing it allowed the mute function to turn on and off, so now what?

    Have you ran the bios UEFI interactive audio diagnostic tests?
    Did they pass too?
    Running the HP UEFI diagnostics in extensive mode you have ruled out major hardware problems.

    Open control panel and view large or small icons.
    Then click troubleshooting.
    On the left pane click view all.
    Run each of these troubleshooters:
    Hardware and devices
    Playing Audio
    Recording Audio

    If running the above troubleshooters does not fix the problem:

    Open device manager.
    Expand each audio inputs and outputs and sound video and game controllers
    For each row click on properties then uninstall each driver (Microsoft or HP)
    Then reboot.
    The Microsoft drivers will reappear.
    Then go to the HP website, enter your serial or product number and the operating system.
    Then download and install the drivers.
    Look again for the IDT High definition Audio Codec and if available install it.

    When you viewed the HP web site for software and drivers were you able to change the operating system from 10 to 7 or 8.1? If it is not listed there then it may not be the solution to the audio problem.


    There are probook models listed for this driver. The computer model that you are using is not on the list.

    Open msconfig and see whether your computer is booting in normal startup or selective startup.
