Games controller like Xbox 360 but native pc...

Hi everyone, just a quick Q here which I hope someone can point me on: I've tried help my son set up an Xbox 360 wired controller to his pc for gaming. Now, we've tried JoyToKey and Keysticks but they seem a bit buggy/temperamental.
If we got a pc 'Xbox type' controller could we use native settings from the OS itself (as with a mouse) rather than go through a 3rd party app?
Many thanks in advance and sorry if this is a thick question! :)

I just recently connected an XBOX One controller to my Windows 10 PC. I am playing Skyrim with it. Skyrim picked up the controller and used it automatically. There is a Microsoft app available from the Windows Store called XBOX Accessories (or something like that). Search for that app and it should recognize the controller and it can check to see if the firmware in the controller is up to date for use with Windows 10.

I've plugged wired 360 controllers in to Windows 10 computers without any additional software. They are supposed to work out of the box.
