NTFS formatted hard drive reads in XP, not in Win 7 or Win 10

I'm trying to help a friend.
    Here is his problem:

I have a 1T external hard drive full of mp3's. My winxp computer will recognize and play the files. However if I use a win 7 or win 10 computer I get the message that "this drive needs to be formatted. The volume does not contain a reconized file system." I hook it back up to a xp machine and it works fine
    .

This apparently happens if the drive was formatted for Windows 2000, XP will read it but not later versions. See the answer here...
...You may convert the NTFS 3.0 volume to NTFS 3.1 using Windows XP. Refer the section "Converting NTFS Volumes Formatted by Using Windows 2000” from the link...

Thanks, I'll have him try it or at least check.
