    Internal drives slow or inaccessible from Devices and Drives screen.


    I've tried to find answers to this issue using Google and this forum's search feature. I'm sure this must have happened to others but I can't find any information. It's possible I haven't used the correct search terms as I'm unsure how to describe the issue properly. I'll try to explain.

    I have 9 hard-drives in my PC. A couple of small SSDs and a few HDDs. On the Devices and Drives screen I have the display set to Tiles, so you get the red or blue bars under the drives according to how full they are. Sometimes, when I go to this screen one of the drives listed will have just the drive name and no other information about the drive showing. At this time the long bar at the top, next to and left of the Search box will show a green loading bar and show that the PC is trying to access the drive in question. Sorry I don't know the correct name for this part of the UI - it the area that shows 'This PC' or your computer's name and where you can manually enter a location on the PC to navigate to. The weird thing is it can and does happen to any of the 9 drives I have installed. Even the newer ones. All these drives are internally connected. It appears to be completely random too. When I restart the PC the issue sometimes has gone away and won't happen for a few hours or half a day or even a day. Then the same issue will occur randomly on a different drive.

    It almost looks like a really sneaky virus but I have MalwareByes 3 and Comodo Firewall installed and I've run various on and offline scans. All show zero infection.

    Next time it happens I will try and screenshot it to post here. Usually when this happens though it ends up causing a crash and requires a reboot.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    That's normal behaviour when a drive is slow to respond, maybe because it powered down while idle. Usually you don't have to wait long. If it's taking too long it suggests a hardware problem, either the drive itself has errors or maybe the HDD controller has problems. Event Viewer may shed some light...

    Next time it happens I will try and screenshot it to post here. Usually when this happens though it ends up causing a crash and requires a reboot.

    In the mean time, you may not need a reboot. Restarting Explorer should be sufficient.

    Thanks for the fast reply. I'll have a look in Event Viewer and report back. Some notes on your other points:


    I know it's normal for when drives have been idle, but this is new behaviour and happens randomly on any of the drives, even the newer ones.


    I'm fairly familiar with Windows OSes. I'm no expert but I can set up a BIOS, root around a bit in the registry, and handle a little overclocking. When I mentioned it requires a reboot I mean once this has happened it seems to cause the whole PC to come to either a grinding halt or slow to the level of being unusable. Sometimes I can't get to Task Manager to quit a process.


    FYI: I am on W10 and part of the beta program. I joined that in the hope an update to the operating system might fix whatever is the problem, but unfortunately it still occurs. Having said that, I haven't experienced it today after I turned off indexing.

    How do you have these drives connected? Are they all connected directly to the motherboard or do you have a SATA card that they are connected to? If they are connected to a card, you may want to look into newer drivers for the card, or maybe a firmware update for the card itself.

    All drives are direct to the motherboard. It's a Gigabyte X79S UP5 WIFI (rev. 1.0)

    Reporting back: Since I turned off indexing I have not had the issue return. Now I hesitate to Mark as Solved as I aren't convinced quite yet. But if I had to pick a side it does look, dare I say it... fixed?

    Hey all,

    Well it looks like my issue is resolved. The last thing I did was turn off indexing so I have to attribute it to that. I've not had problems before with indexing but it looks like this time, in Windows 10, indexing was causing my drives to slow incredibly or even crash. Don't know why but honestly, I have not had any drive be slow to open since.
