Thanks for posting your fix edino, I would have been stumped without it.
Oddly, the last thing I did before my keyboard became borked was install HP System Event Utility. Uninstalling it didn't fix the problem so I ended up here.
As far as I know this laptop has never had VMWare Workstation on it.
    The value I found was:
    Syn TP
    ETD
    kbdclass
Deleting the first two lines then reboot fixed the problem.
I then reinstalled HP System Event Utility to see what would happen but everything worked fine the second time.

Hey everyone, I just got this issue after installing VMWare Workstation 15 and the fix for it was the below steps:

    1 - Navigate to the registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E96B-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

2 - Once you find the two folders, there is no need to expand them further (if you do, you'll find folders labeled "0000", "0001", "Properties", etc. -- just ignore these).
3 - To fix the keyboard, click directly on the 4D36E96B-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318 folder (don't expand it). Once you click the folder, you'll see registry value files appear on the right hand side.
4 - The file you're looking for is the last one in the group -- the one named UpperFilters. Double-click on it, and a small box opens titled "Edit Multi-Screen"
5 - Once the Edit Multi-Screen box opens, you want to delete any information in the Value data: field (if there is any), and type kbdclass When finished, click the OK button.
6 - Reboot your system and I hope the issue will be fixed.
Just registered so I can leave my thanks to you!

    this saved me!
thanks so much for posting this information.

It seemed some changes made in DriverStoreExplorer made this change. I was unable to use keyboard at all.

MS should make it easier to repair this! There's a troubleshooter, but it was useless.

Thanks Edino. This ultimately worked for me, however, after editing the registry and restarting, I still had the same problem. I then went to Device Manager and uninstalled my keyboard and restarted. Upon reboot the problem was resolved.

Now, let me try and pay it forward a little. If you have gotten to this thread it means either you are using another computer to try and solve your problem since you cant use the keyboard on the other computer, or you have figured out how to use the on-screen keyboard and the touch keyboard on your defective computer.

For those using another computer, here is how you can type on your defective computer and institute edino's solve below. First, if like me you have a PIN to enter on start up, on that log-in screen you will see in the bottom right, if using Win 11, the outline of a person. If using Win 10, I think it is two arrows at right angles and a kind of semi circle. Click the icons, and select "on screen keyboard." A keyboard appears on the screen for which you can now type your PIN. Once the computer finishes booting up and your desk top appears, the on screen keyboard is gone. What you need to do now is if using Win 11, right click on the task bar at the bottom of the screen, and click Taskbar Settings. Once you have done so, you will see an option to turn on Touch keyboard. Do that, and a keyboard will appear on your Task Bar. If using Win 10, do the same thing, and I think a menu comes up with Show Touch screen keyboard button. Click that option. Once you have done so, the keyboard will appear on your Task Bar. Click it, and you can then type whatever entries you need to do as described below.
