dvd drive will not function at all.

I have an HP, Win 10 Computer & a problem with the D drive that's not functioning.
I can insert a Disc in the Drive & nothing happens except for the waiting circle[Green
revolving] on the my Computer page . This continues until i finally am able to shut down my Computer
page at which time the Screen gos dark for 5 minutes or more eventually allowing my Desktop to reapear.
This is my 3rd DVD Drive, having purchased a brand new one. Any help would be appreciated & thank you.

    Welcome to the TenForums @parker41

What happens when you install a regular CD into drive. Can you browse it in file explorer?

What is the "Autoplay" set to on your machine. Start => Settings => Devices => Autoplay

Does this happen on blank DVD's as well?

You might try a clean boot to determine if this is an issue with Windows or a software package.

Nothing happens when i insert a retail music CD. I should think that Windows should ask to boot from CD rom[boot sequence] but no. Thereare no lights on the dvd player[front] & in my computer when i right clic on [D] i get open instead of play. And after i do that in the url i get "my pc" and then a long green bar starts to slowly traverse the bar from left to right.Thank you again for the reply, would appreciate it if you have anyother ideas.

    Okay.

So what is Autoplay set too?

You may wish to install this player and see if things change.

I should have asked originally, does your device show enabled and working in Device Manager?

Autoplay is on, device mgr, " hl-dt-st dvd-ram gh40l" States that it is working perfectly.
also I have vlc media player installed & but have never used it in this context. Does not the cd/dvd rom have to spin/function? And again Many Thanks.

Yes it does have to spin. Device manager says it is working and I think you said this is your third device. It obviously has power as normal cd will spin up as you said green bar was expanding.

Since this is your third drive lets assume it is not the drive that is at fault. This has us moving back into machine and cabling.

Have you tried a different power cable, ideally not on same branch. Yes drawer opens but is it getting enough power.

Then to the sata cable. Can we change and can you change Motherboard port.

I would not make all changes at once so that you can isolate root cause.

OK, I installed a new sata cable and on the motherboard the original was connected to the red female connector so I have another hp which is similar and on that machine the dvd rom is connected to the lite blue on the MB so I connected the new cable to the lite blue on this computer. Now I used another power supply connector & it's still doing pretty much the same. However after boot up I opened the tray to see if that worked
and it asked me to please insert a disk which already had a cd in it so I closed the tray but it's still doing pretty much the same. I tried to update the driver but stated the one I had was the best. Thanks again.

So recognized in Windows, not a power issue, not a cable issue, not a port issue.

I assume it is recognized properly in BIOS but I guess it is worth checking.

In this thread, posting 12 it talks to a corrupt driver. I would not perform this action with the proper back ups in place to recover, like restore points, a system image and my data safely backed up.

    DVD writer not recognised

Now yours is different. You said yours is recognized.

Ken, I know i'm a newbie but I do not see a posting 12 in this thread. The dvd does show in the bios.
