    microphone mutes itself

When i go into properties the mike is muted. When I unmute it works for less than a minute then mutes again. The only suggestion I have found is set as default device which does not solve problem. I have also read it is a virus but I cannot solve with malware or virus scans. It first became a problem just a few weeks ago while skyping. Never had a problem with mike until then.

Troubleshooter finds the microphone muted and fixes, Within a minute the microphone mutes itself again.

    Welcome to the TenForums @mahahual

There are two troubleshooters in the trouble shooting section, one for speech and one for recording sound. They may be a starting point. Type troubleshooting into cortana search bar, select app at top of list, click. When window opens click View All upper left.

When you run a trouble shooter always click advance and run as administrator,

You didn't mention which sound adapter / card you have, found is device manager. Create a restore and then check for updated driver.

Some adapters like Realtek have an icon in systray that allows you to open the Realtek Audio Manager. Might be worth seeing if you have similar software and if something is set there.

Also check if you have a microphone mute switch on device that may have been knocked out of position. Neither on nor off.

Of last resort you may want to uninstall device from device manager, reboot and let it be re-installed. Make sure you already have restore point.

You said it started with Skyping. Might be an idea to uninstall and see if operation returns to normal, then re-install.
