Its not a waste of time to get the hardware recognised and identified properly under the OS after a clean install, but there are zero performance gains from a lower version to any higher version because its just identifying the components correctly.
Though you may not think so there are some performance gains and improvements if you choose to read the version notes. One should always get the latest version of any software supporting their system for stability and performance sake.

Whether you actually see of feel this performance is a different story. This is also where benchmarking comes into play.

    My two cents.

Again the chipset inf files are not drivers, aside from getting devices recognised, its not the same as a graphics or audio or other device drivers that have sys files, that fix bugs improve performance etc.

I think if you havent already read this Learn about IntelĀ® Chipset Software Installation Utility

    Not drivers fact.

    Intel said:

A driver is a program that allows a computer to communicate (or talk to) a piece of hardware. The Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility is not a driver and does not include drivers.
It is important I think to get all pieces of the hardware properly recognised where the chipset is concerned, but the performance here is unaffected by upgrading the chipset INF at a later date...

I certainly know what a device driver is. That wasn't my point. Notice the notes for this latest version on the first page of this thread. The "Notes" are there to inform users of any updates, known issues, and resolved issues. This particular update addresses Xenon and Skylake processors. That's my point - that they do provide enhancements/improvement. They may not apply to you, but they apply to someone. Thus my counter to your statement.

    Peace :)

Perhaps due to my poor English, I see no known/resolved issues there.

Its on this page Download IntelĀ® Chipset Device Software (INF Update Utility)

    https://downloadmirror.intel.com/207...010.1.1.42.htm

However they all claim no issues except the date is 1970/01/01 for the recognised devices supported under this version that to me is a known issue, though it wont affect anything.

    I would consider it a non-issue.

    Hi,

Would anyone consider that having all devices installed dated 1970/01/01 an issue when using 10.1.1.42?
There's a good reason for this time stamp. (It's in the release notes) It's no issue whatsoever.

    Hi,

It's in the release notes that accompany version 10.1.2.85 (server) and probabably .84 as well:

4 All Chipset INF versions are set back to 1970 (to avoid unforeseen issues such as recently found SMBus issue)
    Cheers,
